USS Marlin (SST-2)

This museum sub was an associate member in the HNSA, but is no longer listed.  I cannot find ANYTHING out about this boat at all.

Does anyone have any information?  Is it still around even?

In November 2007 I wrote an article about the the SST-1 USS Mackerel, which was the sister ship of the Marlin.  Both operated out of Key West when I was on the Picuda (SS-382) 

Mackerel and her sister Marlin (SST-2) were decommissioned on 31 January 1973, in a dual ceremony at the Naval Station, Key West, Florida; both were struck from the Naval Vessel Register on the same day. Mackerel was sunk as a target off Puerto Rico on 18 October 1978.

So I know the fate of SST-1.  And SST-2 should be here: Marlin was put on display as a memorial submarine in Freedom Park at the Greater Omaha Marina at 2000 North 25th Street, in Omaha, Nebraska.

Last I heard was that Freedom Park was having trouble.   What kind of trouble I don't know.  Now they are no longer members of the HNSA.  Their website does not load.

Perhaps I should ping Bill Lee...I think he was trying to get into contact with someone from the Marlin.

Frankly, with all the Midwestern flooding, I would not be surprised if the Marlin was out for a cruise!

I haven't heard much about Omaha being under water, but it would be hilarious (to a point) to see it floating down stream.  Maybe another city will get it that will take better care of her. :)

I also read a while back that Freedom Park was considering moving across the Missouri River onto the Iowa side.  That was probably just a rumor.

IT WOULD BE NICE IF SOMEONE GOT THE MARLIN AND LOOKED AFTER HER.SHE IS THE LAST OF HER KIND.MANY TIMES A NAVY SHIP GOES TO BE BROKEN UP THEN EVERYONE FALLS ALL OVER EACH OTHER SAYING WE SHOULD HAVE SAVED THIS ONE OR THAT ONE.

The Batfish is serious about the Marlin coming to us for a permanent home.  There is a lot that would need to be done to accomplish this though.   If you hear any rumor let me know....

From the USSVI Subvet news dated 5/18/2008

A bulletin from HSNA regarding Freedom Park, home of USS Marlin (USS T-2)

I have been advised by Mr. Dennis Bryers, who is a Landscape Architect and Park Planner with Omaha Parks, Recreation & Public Property Department, in Omaha, that the city of Omaha plans to reopen Freedom Park this coming Memorial Day Weekend.
