Title: 9th Annual Batfish Volunteer Day
Post by: MWALLEN on April 05, 2008, 09:51:22 PM
Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 is the 9th Annual Batfish Volunteer Day.  This is our annual workday that preceeds the annual Batfish Reunion.  We always try to get the park spruced up to honor the former crew members and we can use all the help we can get.

Mark your calendars now, make flight arrangements (Lance) and get down to Muskogee, OK.

Rick - can we open at 9am that day?  Also, should I contact Matt about lunch?  Do we want to send out emails to our respective distribution lists to let people know?

Even if you can't make it, pass along the word so other may know.

Thanks,

Mark A.

...Mark your calendars now, make flight arrangements (Lance) and get down to Muskogee, OK...

Thanks for the invitation, and you know I'd love to be there.  Honestly?  I'm 30 years old and I've NEVER been on an airplane.  My brother moved to Seattle, WA a few years ago, so I'm sure that will change sometime soon.

I did, however, add the event to the calendar.  To do this I had to edit your post to link it to the calendar.  It's a pretty neat feature of this forum.  Anyway, that's why you see that note about me editing your post, but I didn't do anything to it other than check a checkbox.

Take some pics that day.

No worries!  And thanks for making this a sticky also.

Mark A,
Yes we will open at 9:00.  I can try and get the ROTC kids out again.  They are a big help for the manual labor.  I will also send an email out to everyone.  I am due for another Scuttlebutt letter.  I think it would be a good idea to get Matt to pitch in for lunch.  I may even suggest to crank up a grill and do hotdogs and hamburgers fot the day.    We do have a fire pit maybe a nice Hawaiian Pig roast.  There are some more trees that need to be cut down.   :)

Rick - I've already sent out an email...you were included on it, so feel free to just forward it along.

I'll touch base w/ Matt about lunch...as for cooking out...sounds good...but we'll need volunteers to cook and I can't haul a grill down the turnpike.  Besides, with my limited time, I'd rather get the the 40 working   ;)

9 am it is...I'll update the website and as soon as I hear from Matt, I'll send out an updated email.

Thanks!!

Again ROTC kids are good laboror.   We also seem to have an over abundance of Community Service (CS) kids.  I keep the chores simple for them, but very labor intensive.  I seem to get a lot done this way.  Just look at what they did on the fence and the burn today.

Yeah, we saw smoke on the horizon all day   :coolsmiley:

Seriously, they (CS and ROTC kids) do work hard and have done a GREAT job.  Personally, I'd rather them do that and let us work on the sub.

Everything and everyone contributes to making the park a better place.  My wife and I were talking today on the bridge and as long as I've been there (started in 1998) the park has not looked better.  Just wanted to let you know we think you are doing a great job running the park (and letting us have some creative freedom).  BZ to you, Rick.

Rick - I heard from Matt and he says the foundation can cover lunch.  He can't make it, but is going to coordinate with Ed.

I guess you'll need to get a head count regarding JROTC/CS people.  I've not had any responses yet from my email.  FYI.

Rick -

Response has been underwhelming for the work day.  I've not heard from anyone other than Matt (who won't be there) who turned over the lunch detail to Ed (who I've not heard from).

My wife and I will be there...you can cook us up some burgers

I will see what I can do.   I just heard from Dennis Gilbert as well. He will not be makeing it either.  He had to go in for bypass today.   He is our torpedo guy and the one heading up the deck project.

From your email, it sounded as if he was going to be able to come up...guess that changed.

Maybe we can still start on the deck on the 3rd...depending on who is there and how current projects are going.

I've just sent out my 3rd email regarding the volunteer work day on May 3rd.

From the looks of things, don't expect many people.  My wife and I will be there...Vaughn (not Mary) will be there...and Ed.

Maybe your contact list will have better results.

I will be available after we finish on the 40mm.

Vaughn is going to start looking at the supports for the bridge deck tomorrow.

I guess I will be there at heart with you guys, as I will go to work on the U.S.S. Grayling memorial (cleaning graffiti off etc.) out here to get ready for the memorial service on May 17th.

Go out to http://rockymountainsubvets.com/html/events.html (http://rockymountainsubvets.com/html/events.html) for info on the memorial.

Also Mark Allen has a point mention how great all us volunteers are!!  ;)
We all want our shot of fame as well.

Well, the turnout was less than hoped for, but we did have a few come out.  Was sunny and windy, but turned out to be a nice afternoon.  Got a few things done such as painted the underside of the aft cigarette deck, got the flags hung, Vaughn started on the bridge deck supports, Chris (?) and Brandt started pulling the deck way up forward, got a little of the 40mm worked on.  We appreciate the Batfish Foundation for buying lunch and I appreciate all that came out and helped.

I'll try to post a photo or two later.

Mark

Well, at least you got some things accomplished. That is better than nothing. I could not make it out to the Sub memorial out here to clean it up, because I got tied up volunteering at another  place for my moms work. Im kinda mad.

I know how you feel, Travis. But helping out a parent, even when you don't feel like it, shows true character. Your parents are lucky to have you. And it will come back to you in many ways. You'll get more time at the Batfish.

My reply for everyone.  Great job,  I get all Giddy inside every time I look over and see the 40 mm pointed straighte up.    ;D

The colors really brighten up the boat.  She looks better this year then last year.  The grounds are even looking better....
Never give up we are winning the battle....

May through July are such busy months it seems.  Every weekend has something scheduled on the calendar.  It's good to hear you had some folks show up to work.

I'll be there next year.  We got rid of a bunch of stuff at the Jenks community yard sale and we have some more to ditch at Goodwill.  I don't think there will be much left for next year's sale.

I have a sofa-bed that I would love to see disappear - been in my garage for a year.  The cats scratched up the corners, though.  It would need to be re-upholstered, but it's in great shape, otherwise.  Puppy feels like it weighs 300 lbs.

Anyway, it's your for free, if you want it.  I can take some pictures of it.  You would have to come up and haul it home, but it will fit into a pick-up bed.

Here it is in all of it's wonderful glory.  It comes with pillows and arm rest covers, too.  We also had a couch cover for it, but I'm not sure where it got to.

Looks like a great thing to put in an out-of-the-way place in the museum for pooped volunteers!

I'll tell you what is probably more valuable to volunteers than that comfy-looking couch -- a shower. When the Silversides was in Chicago, we sporadically had access to hot-water showers on Navy Pier and later in an Army Corps tug the museum used to own. It was great to have, especially when you stayed overnight to lead and chaperone the scout groups.

What I have another home?

Not a bad idea for the volunteers.  I will need to work this one out.
