Title: Memorial Day - Activities?
Post by: Lance Dean on April 18, 2008, 07:58:07 PM
Memorial Day is on May 26th this year.  I was wondering what kind of events each submarine museum might be holding this year?

We are going to have our burial as sea. I think The Legion Post 15 honor guard will be helping out.   as well as the reenactors and maybe ROTC.

If it keeps raining like it does, we'll have enough water in the basin to make it the real deal.

Title: Memorial Day at COD
Post by: Paul Farace on May 21, 2008, 11:43:53 AM
COD doesn't do anything herself. Instead we host at least two different 'wreath in the water' ceremonies for various groups. One really big (several hundred people) and the other a bit smaller. The USSVI clan will do something related to the day, but I think it's on Saturday (guess they don't want to ruin a good long weekend?)...
In any case COD is open and does a good job of reminding visitors that "freedom isn't free..."

Nice photos.  Not sure why the guys decided to stand behind the deck gun.

Hopefully I along with my wife Emily will be visiting Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, AL Sunday.  We'll pester Tom a bit and hopefully meet up with Mark Allen and his wife sometime during the day.  Memorial Day will be spent visiting the cemeteries where our WWII veteran family members are buried and then it's over to my in laws house for a barbecue.

I just sent out a mass forum member email asking everyone to talk about what they are doing for the weekend.

Well, I graduate on Friday and im not really sure otherwise for the weekend. I am hoping I will be able to get together with the Cavalla SubVet and talk with him. Other than that I will be spending time with my family, and trying to honor my family's veterans.

I was going to have a race this Sunday for the OK State Championship Series but it was moved. So for once I actually have a clear weekend. My ladyfriend is moving in so I guess I will be adjusting.  If I show up at the Batfish looking like this  :uglystupid2: it's because I am now a man.....with a Irish women complete with frying pan. I would like to come out to the boat but I need to see what they have planned so I don't show up at the wrong time and mess something up.

Razorback Base will participate in Memorial services at National Cemetery in North Little Rock, Arkansas followed by memorial at the Snook memorial near the USS Razorback.

Travis,
Congrats on the grad.  I have a gift for ya I just have not sent it out yet.

I thought we learned our lesson,  Women Bad....... ;D

No offense to the ladies out there. (this is a bit of an inside joke.)

It is good to see a Razoback guy out there.   I thought we were the only inland sub with a voice out there.  The Razoback is a great complement to the Batfish as she is the same class sub.  but the only think the same is the shape of the outer (primary) hull.  It is neat to see the comparison and evolution of submarines.

Title: Why stand behind the gun?
Post by: Paul Farace on May 22, 2008, 02:22:29 AM
The folks are standing behind the gun because they each represent a different group that drops a wreath into the lake. And they are about to, or just did, drop a wreath. Hence, they need to be near the starboard rail. We had to take the lead and ask them to use raffia wreaths. The styrofoam rings were not enviromentally friendly.

The Blueback Base of USSVI iis holding a Lost Boat ceremony on Memorial Day at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). The ceremony will start at 1300, behind the OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) building, next to the Willamette river and the USS Blueback. The ceremony includes a salute by one of Portland's fire boats using its water cannons shooting red, white, and blue water.   The Coast Guard will also be there with their RIB's on the river as well as in the person of a guest speaker.  Everyone is invited and the weatherman is telling us that it will be dry that day!

The following week the "Rose Festival Fleet" comes up the Columbia river, from Astoria, into the Willamette river and downtown Portland for its annual visit.  While here the ships are open for tours to the public.  Security is tight and lines are long. There usually are 8 to 10 ships involved, not submarines, but some of our Navy "Targets" as well as some from the U.S. Coast Guard and the Canadian Navy will be here.  PT-658, one of the last PT boats to survive, now fully restored, is usually part of the "fleet" as well. Last year she served as an escort for part of the trip up the river.

My wife and I along with about 100 others will bus to Astoria and ride one of the ships into town again this year.  This year we will be aboard the USS Gary (FFG-51).  The "fleet" is kind of special to me as my dad was part of the "fleet" visiting the rose festival on the USS Honolulu (CL-48) when he met my mother.

Sounds great though.  but I am currious as to how you got the day of sun shine.  The last time I heard OR got 364 days of rain a year.     :2funny:

Sorry had to do it....

You should know that the man upstairs takes care of Submariners, even here in Oregon! ::)
