Brent,
Here is something that we as a whole group did here a few (6) years ago and yes you will see your crew asking questions and you will also see empty promises it now seems like coming from the guy whose chair you now occupy..

Darrin,
Thanks for highlighting this thread. Tons of good information that can prove useful in the near future. I was just in a conversation with a board member about setting up emergency funds in case an event of this nature arises. Good to see the crew interaction and I did pick up the other aspects you were mentioning. ;)

This brings back memories... :) Our current "surround sound" amp does a pretty good job of belting out alarms and announcements. So, this project has been on the back burner for a long time. Other things, like the deck and phone system, took precedence... and still do. The bridge needs A LOT of work, the outer hatches need new seals, we need to come up with better doors for the stairwells, etc.

Brent,
The Strip Ship thread was to get peoples eyes open about getting their repair parts before MARAD sent them to the scrapper and most if not all of the WWII ships are gone and now you would be trying to get into the '50s-60s, '70s ships which makes it harder to use the parts because they just don't quite match especially historically when dealing with take the IC Stack or Radio and various other compontents.

The only WW2 ships left in any Government Reserve Fleet are the 2 Bouy Tenders in Suisun Bay (Iris WLB-395 and Planetree WLB-307)
The next closest is the Observation Island AGM-23, which dates from 1953 and there are only a small handfull of 1950's era ships left. Once in a while, you can find WW2 parts on a 1950's/1960's era ship if the ship was built using parts already onhand/in stock and those parts were procured in WW2.
The best remaining chance for WW2 parts will be when the Navy disposes of the Shadwell (LSD-15). But who knows when that will be, if the ship will even be safe for boarding at that point and if the parts you want are in a section that they didn't reconfigure or burn up?

Which leave anyone trying to strip parts from the "dead fleets" going onto the mid '50s Auxillary ships and hoping because the other "main line" ships have been stripped out, you will now have to think WAY outside of the box to get the parts that you need..

That is mostly true, but USNS Observation Island (AGM-23) just entered the Beaumont NDRF about 5 months ago, I doubt she was stripped out yet and she is early 1950's construction.
