Post by: Lance Dean on March 18, 2009, 05:30:14 PM
Hopefully tomorrow we'll be visiting the Drum.  If it goes through as planned, I'll have some photos to share with you guys.

We made it back home safely.  I didn't take as many photos as usual.  Here are what I took:

Big target bearing 090, range 1500 yards, speed zero.  Appears to be a South Dakota-class BB - OH yes the USS Alabama BB-60 seen through a periscope!  Secure tubs 1-4. Target is friendly.  :'(

Nice photos, Lance.  What happened to the bow?  The rest of the boat looks great.

Geez, John.  You guys up front always want to shoot at things.  You should have asked your Sonarman what the target was first.

The bow doesn't have as much damage as the stern!  It's just decades of neglect.  Ask Tom.   :tickedoff:

Bill - Ears was usually asleep or listening to whales hum...!  Big target like that - you need to get ready fast before it gets away!

John,

Whales don't hum......................they make other disgusting noises.  Speaking of big targets, I got to take a look at the USS Chicago, a heavy cruiser from WWII, through the scope while on OPS.  I thought the Old Man was going to start drooling; it was such a lucious target.  That ship impressed me more than when I saw the Missouri in Bremmerton.  The superstructure was huge and it had 14 inch guns, 5 inch 38s and all kinds of goodies on it.  We snuck up on it and got a "kill" during the OPS.  They were so pissed they wouldn't let us come aboard for a tour for a week!

Like Lance said years of neglect. It sat in the water for over 30 years, never hauled and painted and zinc's never changed and not cathotic protection. Wave action and salt water. The bow needs a lot of repair also but not as bad as the stern. We are hoping to get the stern this spring.

How do they get little baby whales then?  Just proves Bill that you Sonar-types were not all there -  ::)

Speaking of BIG GUNS - I always liked this picture!

I'm surprised that Drum looks as good as it does after hearing that.  Good luck on the repairs.  I wish I could help more than just financially.

John, I was hoping I wouldn't have to describe where litte whales come from.  Just think that it's "magic".  That salvo must have been something to see.  Did you notice you don't see anybody on deck when it went off.  I've heard stories of blown eardrums and worse when men were on deck and the 16s fired.  Neat picture.

Ah but to hear them fire was truly an experiance, hell our sonar girls didn't need their head sets on to hear the Missouri fire broad side because the WHOLE boat could hear her fire ;)   Damn shame the Navy Decommed them all and has no plans to return them to service because they were truly AWESOME and they detered a lot of people from doing stupid things

What's great is that the Missouri is at Pearl in Battle Ship Row.  A fitting memorial.  I did hear the Iowa.  We were deep but just like you said, you felt the salvo, even down there.
