Museum Submarine Discussion / U.S. PACIFIC SUBMARINES IN WORLD WAR II
« on: November 21, 2010, 12:51:54 AM »
Folks,

We have just added, "U.S. PACIFIC SUBMARINES IN WORLD WAR II", by William P. Gruner to the HNSA web site.

http://www.hnsa.org/doc/subsinpacific.htm

It is a summary of the U.S. submarine war in the Pacific. It was written by William P. "Bud" Gruner Jr., class of 1935 in the US Naval Academy who eventually commanded USS SKATE during WW II.

The scan from which this document was prepared for the web did not include the references at the end of the document. If you have a more complete original, please contact me. I  would like to scan and complete the online version.

Although there is no date on the copy of the document I have, Gruner did this quite a while ago.  Any errata that you think should be included with the document would also be appreciated.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Photos Inside a Nuclear Containment Vessel
« on: August 16, 2010, 07:43:26 PM »
Folks,

OK, this is not a submarine, but it is a tour inside a first generation nuclear containment vessel...

HNSA just added an online tour of the Nuclear Ship Savannah.  She is an extraordinary ship and the online tour includes panographic photography:
http://hnsa.org/savannah/

HNSA wishes to thank the Savannah Technical Staff and Bruce Ecker for their hard work in creating this tour.  FYI, Bruce is the photographer responsible for the Balao class USS Pampanito tour:

Museum Submarine Discussion / WW II Submarine Attacks
« on: June 22, 2010, 04:25:59 PM »
Folks,

A spreadsheet version of the Special Operations Research Group listing of attacks by US submarines is now available at:
http://hnsa.org/doc/subreports-sorg.htm

This spreadsheet version is handy if you want to do your own sorting and searching rather than look at the appendix  of the war patrol reports:
http://hnsa.org/doc/subreports.htm#app

HNSA thanks Craig R. McDonald and John D. Alden for their generous donation of the digital copy of the SORG raw data.

Folks,

Another manual is on the HNSA web site.

Demolition Outfit Mark 108 (for Submarines), O.P. 1012, 1942 describes the demolition outfit provided for scuttling a WW II submarine.
http://www.hnsa.org/doc/subdemo/index.htm

FYI,  USS Pampanito still has the locker for this in the control room.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Submarine Guns
« on: March 22, 2010, 12:40:31 AM »
Folks,

At our museum, we get a lot of questions about how the guns survived repeated immersion in salt water.  The vets report it was just a lot of cleaning and grease.  Enclosed is a link to a 1947 document describing the replacement, plating, and painting of parts done to slow the corrosion on the submarine 40-mm Bofors.  I have no idea when they started making the changes to the guns.

http://hnsa.org/doc/boforssub/index.htm

I know the illustrations are bad.  I found this in the National Archives in College Park, MD textual branch and there was not enough time to send the drawings up to cartographic to be scanned.  This will have to wait for another trip.

Note that the 5" 25 cal Mk 40 gun was designed for submarine use from the start.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Volunteer to Scan Documents at NARA
« on: December 08, 2009, 01:55:50 PM »
Folks,

The Historic Naval Ships Association (http://www.hnsa.org) is looking for a volunteer to do some scanning at the National Archives and Records Administration in College Park, MD.  There are some really great ordnance publications, and booklet of general plans, and other documents that would be of interest to the entire historic naval ship community (not just subs.) in their collection.  I would like to expand the offerings, but I am in California so access is not easy.   Someone local can bring their own scanner, and if you have a fast scanner, it is as easy as photocopying (except better quality, cheaper and color.)  Fast scanners are more affordable now than ever (see the offerings from plustek for example.)

Mark,

Did you know that we scanned the microfilm for Pampanito that came from NARA?  The quality is generally poor, and it is not comprehensive, and mostly without the updates, but if you want to send me a hard drive I can fill it up for Batfish.

Folks,

We added a booklet of general plans for USS Lionfish SS 298 to the HNSA web site. The original was a bit rough, but the best available at Battleship Cove.  Our thanks go out to the curator for lending the drawings to be scanned.
