Once you and Bill figure this out, I'll modify the original list to reflect the new data.

Lance,

I noticed that the forum times out quickly when it tries to load avatars and other graphics on the page.  Anyway to change this?

USS Batfish (SS-310) / Sandblasting the Batfish
« on: February 28, 2008, 09:22:23 AM »
Rick,

Over in the Drum forum they mentioned that they can rent a sandblaster for $550/month and someone was donating the sand to them.  They are estimating 2 months to sandblast the whole boat and still being open for visitors.

We have a huge sand bar out in front of the boat.  Maybe we can get the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge it or give us some sand that they already have dredged. They recommend sandblasting over scraping, because scraping won't remove as much of the paint - and it takes forever.  The sandblasting will take it down to the steel.

They are also sandblasting and painting the inside of fuel tanks.  Has anyone been inside the Batfish fuel tanks?

The Batfish is near the Arkansas river in eastern Oklahoma.  So, we don't have the salt spray issue to contend with, but we do get a lot of rain.

I like the sand blasting idea.  $550/month to rent the machine sounds pretty reasonable.  We have a large sand bar on our part of the river.  Maybe we could get the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge it and give it to us.

How do you gain access to the fuel tanks?

Okay, Bill.  I'm waiting to hear from Rick about the right PO Box for the Batfish.  I like the picture that you guys used for her on the USSVI Memorial page.

USS Batfish (SS-310) / 1MC/7MC Help & Parts Needed!
« on: February 27, 2008, 12:35:27 PM »
Some of you have already seen this, but for those of you that haven't, this is the current condition of the Batfish's 1MC/7MC inter-communications stack...

http://www.352nd-mlha.com/Batfish%201MC/index.html

We need copies of the blue prints and manuals for the MI-2590 and MI-2845 signal generators and the MI-2877A voltage amplifiers.  Also, if anyone has spare parts for a 1MC MI-2181-F2 box, that would help us a lot, too.  You can see what is missing in this photo...

I remember verifying this info when I put the list together a few months ago.  It just lacks phone numbers.

Hi everyone.  I've been doing WWII German reenacting since early 2005, but recently got involved with the Batfish when I moved to the Tulsa area in mid-07.  We had a good time doing an event for the tourists in December and I'm looking forward to May.  Our "Skipper" put together skits for the different compartments and it gave people a better idea of what life was like on a fleet boat.  I highly recommend this approach for the other museums and the WWII Navy uniforms are relatively inexpensive compared to other uniforms - you don't need helmets or field equipment, which helps a lot.

Tom,

Have you come up with a cost estimate for your exterior overhaul?.  The Batfish park estimates around $60K for scraping, painting, new deck, etc.  We have the same advantage of being land-locked.  Saves a lot of money on towing and dry dock fees.
