OK folks now that we have the layout of the tanks in place, thanks to all who pitched in when I missed a tank or forgot that the tank was there.....
For the last question of the Tank System is:
What is the total amount of Variable Ballast in pounds that a BALAO Class boat has at it's disposal?? i.e. pump out or bring in to get the boat under the water or in some cases to the surface in an emergency.

I found a possible answer on page 122 and 123.
Not 3,000 psi, but maybe 600 psi plus 225 psi for a total of 825 psi?

I think the Chief is looking for tons of water to get the boat on the roof or downstairs... and it really isn't much considering the overall size of the sub. And yes, I don't know the exact figure at this point (gotta check my fleet sub manual on line)...
Looks like Lance and I will be spending many, many moons on scullery detail before we ever win any water wings... :idiot2:

OK, my new guess is 115.82 tons or 231,640 pounds of water.

you can have at it, I will have look through the list and then do that horrible thing called math and come up with the right answer. Lance from what I saw about the PSI's you were pretty on the spot when it came to blowing the tanks dry and that is a damned good thing to know especially today with the boats that are still in the water because there are a few aparently with their sea chest's and other tanks still open to sea water, that way when you start putting air pressure to the tank you know how far you can go without hurting the boat at all.. Granted on Torsk we only have our compressor running at around 125PSI and we do have two larger ones topside that are rated at roughly 175PSI each that have yet to be plumbed into the air banks and have the power run to them. Good job with the numbers on both the PSI and the amount of variable ballast that can be brought onboard as needed, tonight I will set down and figure the answer out unless someone else would like to confirm Lance's numbers and I will be more then happy to accept that.

I say give it a couple of days before saying who is right, or close to right.

I'm with Lance on giving this one a couple of days to give everyone a chance to prove Lance right or wrong ;) Besides I don't want Paul all alone in the scullery doing the dishes by himself, we gotta give everyone a chance on this one and besides we don't want Martha to have dishpan hands ::)

Just remember if someone else is working on the answer Variable Ballast does not include the torpedo alcohol. ;)
We need to see if Lance's numbers are correct.

Depends on which TM you talk to JT and you know that :2funny: Now the newer glow in the dark boats didn't have the "pink lady" tanks because our weapons ran on otto fuel (makes it's own air underwater) and sadly didn't run on alcohol anymore so no need other then to have the small bottles to clean the contacts on the tube doors and other area's and Doc used to keep a pretty good idea of what we had onboard before we left to go to sea and what we had when we returned from sea. :knuppel2:
Looks like I will leave this one open until monday of next week btw it will be Labor Day weekend so it will open until WED of next week when the next school of the boat will commence with the next block of instruction to be fingered figured out

True but the quiz was about a Balao-class boat. And we sure did have "pink lady" and none of those glow in the dark fish.

Aw come on JT don't forget about the Mk 45 that used to make stuff glow in the dark.... errrr when it detonated that is ;)

I think the torpedo on display in Batfish's FTR is a Mk. 45 - minus the nuke . :)

OK finally got time to check Lance's answer to this question: What is the total amount of variable ballast in pounds that a Balao submarine has at its disposal. (i.e., pump out or in to surface or in emergency)?
Lance was correct 231,640 lbs (115.82 tons of sea water)
Forward Trim - 24.31 Tons of sea water
Fwr WRT = 4.94 tons
Aux Ballast 1 = 30.77 tons
Aux Ballast 2 = 30.77 tons
After Trim = 19.97 tons
Aft WRT = 5.06 tons
total = 115.82 tons x 2,000 lbs = 231,640 lbs
231,640 lbs / 8.56 = 494,350.47 gallons of sea water if anyone cares
1 gal of sea water weighs 8.56 lbs due to sea water being about 2.5% heavier than fresh water (approximately) :)

now that the tank system is over we will start the AIR systems block depending on when Tropical Storm Hannah that is having fun here in Va leaves.

From what I've learned so far, I would HATE to be the man in charge of maintaining the records of weight on the boat and trying to figure out trim.

It wasn't that bad to maintain the records as to what was onboard the only time that I saw anyone have any REAL problems with getting a good trim dive was when the boat was fresh out of the shipyard or it had been a while since there were a full load of weapons onboard instead of one or two for self defense and then it was a fun dive especially if they calculated light (better to be light then heavy IMHO) and the Diving Officer of the Watch had to fight to get her under water or on the flip side fight to get her back to ordered depth while pumping/blowing all kinds of variable ballast out and having to have a higher bell ordered until a good trim dive was achieved.

I don't know - we had a cook stricker "Fat Eddy" and eveytime he stayed ashore for somethinng - our youngest diving officer had a hell of time to trim the boat - see he never paid attention to the fact that "Fat Eddy" was still on the base.
