Title: USSVI MEETING FT WORTH
Post by: Rick on March 27, 2008, 11:29:06 AM
The USSVI meeting in FT Worth is becoming a big issue.  Correct me if I am wrong in any area.   The Museum boats will have a table at the trade show to help promote awareness of the museums.  Reps from all the boats should attend to give the convention goers a chance to ask questions and find out how each museum is preserving their boat.  This will also allow all of the boats another chance to get together and share ideas.

Right now the booth needs a way to play media and a video of each boat.  Perhaps a walking tour of the boat and a video about what has been done and what needs to be done.  I would also suggest everyone bring qinted literature.

My thought would be that someone brings a computer with a large display or even a projector (they can be bought for $450 or less, now - I recommend the Favi 1030).  Each boat saves their film footage as a .WMV file, which is saved onto the computer.  Put all of the movies on the desktop and click on which one that you want to play.  There might even be freeware out there that will automaticaly cycle through movie files.

Another thought is to print out the Google map showing the markers where all of the museum boats are.  It doesn't have to be huge and could be an 8 1/2 x 11 display on the table.

That would be a good idea, so people know that they are in unusual places, like Oklahoma, and arkansas. :o

So, it's a week-long event.  What day do we plan on having the museum boats meeting?  There's no way that I could be down there for a whole week.

The full page ad for the Lockwood Internet Base's projects that will be in the USSVI Convention booklet should be available for viewing soon.  I'll let you know more when I find out.  Or else Bill Lee or Tom Bowser will.  :)

Guys,  We will be setting up the table, probably around Tues or so. As we get closer to the convention time, we can pin down who can be there and what days and so forth. I think the idea of putting things on files then showing them through a laptop or computer makes sense. Plus if someone is there who actually works on a museum boat, they of course can go into much more detail. However anyone wants to present their boat is fine with us. We are just providing the space to get the word out. I would suggest that one of the things to have available for people is info on how to donate and where the money will be going. We willl of course have the POH patches for sale and any of the boats that have their own rockers and want to bring them, we'll help sell those also. Your ideas and wishes are what we want to hear. Just drop me a note and let me know what works for you. Also any movies, pictures, etc you want to send along will be great. Paul sent a nice disc full of pictures of the Cod and I also have saved several of the short videos that the Cod has. I'd like to do that with the rest of the boats. I of course have the trailer that Tom sent from the movie being made on the Drum.
Please let me know how we at LIB can help.

I need a little bit of clairification here.   I think you are talking about the OklaTravelnet reports.  If so,  Which Dork are we talking about here.  The one holding the Microphone or the strikingly handsom babe magnete with the Batfish T-shirt..    Be honest now,  this will determine my next course of action......

What time you are there and what time you can spend with the display is entirely up to you. We will appreciate any and all you can arrange and will answer what questions we can when others aren't around. It is being done as a service to the museum boats, not as another responsiibiility for them to take on. I'll be asking later on in the middle of the summer, so I can have an idea of who can come and when, but don't feel you have to do this or that. We just appreciate all that you do during the year and we want to help and this is one way an internet base can do so. And please send me any videos, etc that you have to add to my museum boats files. Dorks or girls, doesn't matter which. LOL
Thanks,
Bill

The first Ok Travel Video has the reporter-ette doing most of the talking.  I know that you get interviewed, but that's not what I'm referring to.  The second video has this reporter guy trying to ham it up and it doesn't seem to be very professional.  If you have a choice, show the info babe. :)

Guys,
the person to talk to about video and museum submarines is former LT Ken Johnson, he is apart of the K-17 which the Army and the Navy are trying to raise right now, ken also happens to be a member of the International Submariners Association. He has documented a lot of members who have served and his video's are in the Smithsonian and for me it is a kicker because not only is Ken a shipmate of mine from Torsk, but he also sailed with my uncle on the USS Sea Owl (SS-405). When I went to the Sea Owl bbs a while ago I mentioned my uncles name and Ken was the first to respond and two years ago he showed up for his first work weekend on Torsk and has been back for the last two years working his butt off and showing video's and holding movie marathon's just like we used to on the boats. While we some of us can say that our boats are in disrepair Ken can truly say that because his is on the bottom in Providence, RI and he was the last Duty Officer before she sank.. And to answer your question before you ask it.... Yes he did everything right and he begged to get back onboard before she sank so he could keep her from sinking but was denied by the Coast Guard because they felt that she was unsafe at that point (about 6 hours after she started taking on water and had a wicked port list) Could Ken have saved her??? probably but we will never know and he has questioned that for the last year and change and until she is raised will never feel justified or safe with the knowledge that he did everything that was required to secure her for the night.. Ken's website is www.oakhamgraphics.com and I am going to send him a link to here very shortly and see if he wants to come and play.

Guys, hadn't checked this in awhile.  We will have a computer and some type of monitor. We also can use pictures on the tables. Lance is now gathering pictures, movies, and info and will be putting it on a DVD. that we can play there.  I would imagine that when someone from a boat is there, we'll go to that boat and let them basically talk to people and give a tour. You guys are the experts in what works, so we are just there to help get the word out.  Any forms, information, donation blanks, anything like that, please send to me or to Lance.  I'd appreciate any ideas of what you guys figure will work the best. I willl have POH patches and if any of you have rockers and patches you want to sell while there, bring them along. I am also going to be trying to contact some of the boats that haven't checked in yet. There is always someone who knows someone on a boat; so I'll be looking for them.
Let me know what you think and we'll try and do it.

Oh yeah, Darrin get your application in for LIB before the price goes up. LOL

Anyone who is coming to the Convention and wants to bring their own stuff, that is fine.  I will be bringing a computer with a DVD player and a monitor. If anyone has things on WMV or some other format, they could email it, zip it, or usendit to me and I will put it into the computer to be able to show.
If you need to snail maiil anything to me, the address is I'll be leaving on the 31st, so it needs to get there by the 30th. Usually takes about 4 days to get to my house from a lot of places in the country.

Ok Guys, both Dave Farran and Pat Householder took pictures of me pretending to work, so we are covered. A lot of people have looked at Lance's DVD and are impressed. Brochures are going well and there are many that now know what we are doing. The convention is well run and we are busy. Hopefully tomorrow, Tom and Lesley will be there.

News from Rontini:

Things are going very well in Ft. Worth. Temp tonight was in the 70's. A little breezy..
Met Dave Stoops for the first time in life. We've been talking in email and on BBS's for 10 years. Also met Roy Ator. He's been around my BBS for ever also.
What's nice about these affairs is the closeness of the National Officers. Went to dinner last night and sat with Mike Bircumshaw, John and Joan Peters, Pat Householder, and Fred Borgmann from the National Office. Tomorrow Gil and I go to Breakfast with Mike Bircumshaw. Meetings start tomorrow with the District Commanders seminar. Holland Club breakfast was this AM.
I've seen the new calendars and they are terrific. The best yet.
National SK is not here again because of hurricane problems in Louisiana.
I think Bill has also signed up a couple of LIB members. I had another but found out he was from Salt Lake City and I yielded and will get him into the Utah Base. Forgive me. LOL
Bill was very busy today. Pat Householder watched the entire Lance Dean Museum video today. He was concerned it would detract from sales of his calendar. But there is no competition. They will complement each other. Pat is a huge memorial boat care fan and right now has this thing for the Clamagore. That boat is probably most in need of care.
I have spoken with the San Diego Convention planners. This one is going to the biggest ever. Start saving NOW! 600 rooms at the Host Hotel are blocked for us and 300 more to the International Submarine Association. If you want this hotel, get in early.
Bill went to the Welcome Aboard Party tonight at another location. Got to see a Dallas Cowgirl on stilts. How cool is that.
Tomorrow night the crew heads for Billy Bob's. This is the largest watering hole in the country I believe.
Ron Smith showed up today to begin selling his book. Not doing well. He begins chemo Monday. But he's still lucid and in good humor.
That's it...Have to watch the lady from Alaska about to speak.

News from Pat Householder:

Well, Ron may have SEEN a Cowboy Cheerleader in stilts, but I got a couple of kisses from that tall gal!

We had a very spirited board meeting today and a number of things got taken care of.

The weather has been great and the shipmates have been terrific.  It was great to meet Dave Stoops finally, and to chat with Gil Raynor and Ron Martini again.  There really are a great bunch of folks here.

The all color museum boats calendars are going briskly.  Contact Huey Hahn at subhuey@aol.com for ordering information.

Got to go to the Bureau of Printing and saw how they print our money.  Very Impressive!

I only wish that all could be here to share in the good times.

News from Gil Raynor:

Quote
I have enjoyed this convention so far,  I have seen more of my former shipmates here that I have not seen before and this helps build our reunion list for the next Madison reunion in July.  Ron Smith made it, but he is taking a lot of medication and can only work his book table for short periods of time.  Warshot will be starting radiation treatments for cancer on Tuesday.  The Submarine Museum table is being well attended and folks are watching the DVD of the museum boats that Lance Dean put together.  So awareness of the museum boats and their needs is being widened and interest in helping as volunteers, docents and other wise is being gained.

John McMichael came up and spoke at the Holland Club Breakfast, but had to return to Galveston as Billie had some back surgery on the 2nd.  Well, I am so damn tired, gonna sign off for now.

Gil

Guys, sorry for the delay in reporting in. Don't know how someone can get two weeks behind when only being gone for one week.
I wanted to thank very much all who sent brochures and other items for the table. I was late taking off so waited around for the mail that Monday and finally realized it was a holiday.  When I got back the next Monday, I had a nice big package from the Batfish. But don't worry it will go to good use.
We had lots and lots of people who stopped and talked about what they wanted to see, what they had already seen and brought others over to see the DVD Lance had done and pick up brochures. We passed out almost all our bumper stickers, but have a few left if some want a couple.  I am making up packets of a few of each of the brochures and will send them to bases and individuals who will want some during the year.  Paul and a couple of others had sent me some items that could be auctioned or raffled off, but it didn't work out to do that at the convention. However there will be an auction coming up soon, so will put them in that one and we'll try and get a little money for a good cause. There were several people who stopped, who have done work days on the various boats and each was really proud of the boat they worked on. I think we spread the word to many who hadn't heard about all the boats. Every day, more people stopped by and if I was busy with someone, others would stop by and click on the pages and then tell the ones who were with them all about the boat they were looking at. So it was well worth the effort.  I'll save everything and next year, there will be a lot more people to see and learn about your boats.
We had some of the new USSVI Calendars for 2009 on the table also and the two tied together very well. The display also helped sell calendars for USSVI, so that was nice also. If any of you haven't seen one of the Calendars, they are really the nicest that have ever come out and the pictures of the 12 boats for the months are prints that could be framed. The ones that couldn't be put on a month are shown on pages at the back of the calendar. So all are represented.
So thanks to all for what you sent and more importantly for what you do on a daily basis for our museum boats. Thanks of course to Lance for all the  work he put in on the DVD. It was really liked by all. Some would stand there and go back and forth from boat to boat and listen and talk.
I also explained to quite a few how to go about finding who to send money to for various boats, so hopefully some money will come in for some.
Thanks again,
Viejo

Title: Re: USSVI MEETING FT WORTH

Paul, you know my feelings about more scholarships.  Wouldn't it be nice to pick up a half million in donations in one month, then be planning on how to get more.
I'll keep all posted on the next appropriate auction that comes up where we can do some good.
It would be nice to just set up an auction here and raise money, but it takes a large audience that is used to participating and much planning to get it to be worthwhile. Siince the one of the aims of USSVI this years is to promote museum boats, then maybe I can talk someone into running an auction. What would help is if you guys had an agenda that would show where money coulld go where it could benefit all.
