No matter who you voted for, keep an open mind and don't think you know what the next four years looks like, you just never know. I am so glad to hear so many McCain supporters saying they will give Obama a chance. We are after all the UNITED States of America not the red vs. blue states of America.

I'm sorry I missed it, was out of town that day.

Yeah, the Trumpy's are pretty big too. What we really need is a 1/350 line of subs  :coolsmiley:

Thanks for the links!

As Fred said, just start small. It's a blast and it's very rewarding.

Fred, Trumpeter makes a 1/144 Gato kit. They make an early war and a late war boat. Not sure about the limber hole patterns though.  I have one sitting in front of me at the moment and my only complaint is the kit only includes one 3"50 and two 20mm. I'd have like to seen a 5" and a 40mm bofors to model other versions.

Well, offically I don't have a "job" as I am still a student, no summer jobs yet either, but I do occasionally build scale models on commission. It's a good way to make a hobby work for you. It doesn't make me filthy rich, but it gives me enough for dates and it's more fun than the McDonald's drive through window  :coolsmiley:

Oh and if any of you guys ever want a nice model sub to display, I'd be happy to donate one. However, where you'd put it I have no clue. Just sayin' all the same. ;)

Nothing much for me, except planning and executing a surprise party for my grandmother's 80th birthday. Well, actually other people are doing it but as is inevitable with my (extended) family it's a fiasco.  :uglystupid2: Anywho, not much else.

Wikipedia has reported that the US Navy has awarded ex-Edson (DD-946) to the Wisconsin Naval Ship Association as of 10/10/08. All I can say is no organization is more worthy of this honor. They fought for more than a decade to save USS Des Moines, only to see her scrapped at the last minute. Hopefully the Saginaw Valley organization can find it in them to move on and choose another ship. This comes as a bit of a surprise as Sheboygan was always considered the underdog and it was generally believed that Saginaw was more likely to be the winner, but this assumption happily proved false. She is expected to be towed in 2010. The museum will be completed in 2009.

I'd probably wait for confirmation from WNSA before posting, but this is just too good not to share.

Well done indeed, a fitting memorial to the ship and her brave crew.

USS Ling (SS-297) / Re: USS Ling Status
« on: October 03, 2008, 11:42:41 AM »
Is the corrosion on her hull so severe they cannot tow her at all? Or would it be possible to get her to a drydock and patch her up before towing her in open ocean? What about building a temporary cofferdam around her and patching her up that way? Both of these ideas seem pretty expensive, and the cost of dredging to get her out of there is in the millions too.

I think it is pessimistic to say that she is beyond viable repair. She's not sunk yet, so there must be a way to refloat her. But then, what do I know.  :uglystupid2:

Even as I say this, it truly seems that the only viable way to save Ling, barring intervention by the state/city/federal government/really rich sub guy (take your pick) is to keep her where she is.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Hopefully someday when I have the time I'll be able to make it down to Torsk (I was there a couple years ago before restoration began) as I would love to help with the restoration.

Hey guys,

My name is Avery, I live in the Philly area. My local sub would be Becuna at Independence Seaport museum, however Torsk in Baltimore and Growler in NYC are also close. I'm an amateur history buff and sub enthusiast. I also build models, both for fun and on commission. I love subs and am always eager to do what little I can to support them, however being a student prevents me from actually doing hands on restoration work.

This seems like a great forum and I'm glad to be here.
