Museum Submarine Discussion / General Information Book
« on: August 21, 2017, 10:44:24 PM »
A couple of years ago, I came across the General Information Book for SS310 which I have since digitized. The book was a comprehensive hand over hand completed in July of 1955. There's a ton of good information in there. If there's any general info that's lacking, makers of individual pieces of equipment, various systems, schematics, electrical draws of galley equipment, and etc. just let me know and I'll share. The files are too big to email so we'll see what we can do.

Website Updates and Off-Topic Discussion / New Display
« on: November 21, 2011, 07:06:16 PM »
If any of you are near the Oklahoma area, you should head to Oklahoma City. On December 5th, the Oklahoma History Center will be unveiling a new Pearl Harbor display. Unbeknownst to many, the OHC houses a great many U.S.S. Oklahoma items to include the stern letters, officer's silver serving set, uniforms, and even a piece of the hull removed during the recovery. Just an FYI for those interested.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Water and San Line Help
« on: November 16, 2011, 03:47:06 PM »
On the Batfish, we've started a hand over hand on the water and san lines. Most appear in good condition...at least prior to pressure testing.
The toilets aren't on the list of restoration as of yet so we're drying to decide how to drain the san lines from grey water without dumping into the san tanks. Any ideas?

Museum Submarine Discussion / Batfish's VJ Day Event
« on: September 07, 2010, 07:17:52 PM »
Here are a few pictures from the Batfish's VJ Day event.

The crew was giving tours non-stop from 9am until about 5pm. The event also saw the breaking of records in both the number of people through the museum in a single day as well as the most money raised in a single day.

USS Batfish (SS-310) / Batfish Gun Locker
« on: January 05, 2009, 02:32:46 PM »
Last Saturday also started a 4 day in a row work week for Cody, Travis Franklin, and myself.

In addition to freezing all three nights, we finished the displays in the wardroom, captain's cabin, and goat's locker.

We cleaned the crap out of the galley and crew's mess as well as polished some stainless while we were there.

The cold stores locker is ready for display if yours truely can ever remember to get to Lowes and pick up four large bolts to secure the grate to the floor and we cleaned out the arms locker.

On February 20th, you will find the gun cabinets fully stocked with 03 Springfields, 1911's, 1919's, Thompsons, carbines, trench guns, and period 40's ammo boxes.

We were able to trace the power supply lines into the boat. They enter the boat from the air salvage line to the after engine room (which coincidentally is where one of the leaks are).

We've also been studying the wiring diagrams to contemplate the feasability of hooking up power to the shore terminals although this may be a huge undertaking.

We had quite a nice work week.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Officer's Pantry
« on: November 13, 2008, 02:32:43 PM »
Do any of the other boats out there still have the original wall between the ward room and officer's pantry? I need a bunch of good pictures to see what it looks like as well as what the pass through looked like.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Uniform research
« on: November 12, 2008, 08:24:01 PM »
Are there any museums out there that have a pair of the sandals worn by the WW2 crews? I'm trying to find some pictures of exactly what they looked liked.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Reverse Engineering
« on: October 18, 2008, 07:49:01 PM »
This is a shameless plug for myself but I might be able to help a couple of other boats other than my own. I know that museums are not all that well funded so I'm offering my services for only the cost of the material and the wear and tear on the tracker.

I just wanted to throw this out there if anyone would like to utilize it. If you have any pieces, parts, or components that you need reverse engineered, I might be able to help. If you've priced it, just laser tracking a piece will cost you roughly $200 /hr but it's well worth it when you can't find another piece to replace the one you're dealing with. I am a certified laser tracker operator and might be able to do the same thing for any of the museum boats for a fraction of a fraction of the price. All files that you get can be read by any machine shop with computer engineering software so you're new parts will end up within .00012" of the original. It's just a thought but as you realize that you need multiple copies of something you only have one of or a copy of something that another museum has, such as those pesky "christmas tree" light covers, just let me know and we'll work something out.

I use New River Kinematics Spatial Analyzer software with a FARO X V2 laser tracker. To look at some of the companies that use this program and the projects that have been done with the SA program and the FARO tracker go to http://www.kinematics.com/ and http://www.faro.com/

Museum Submarine Discussion / Air System
« on: October 07, 2008, 01:56:35 PM »
We've been discussing the possibility of restoring the Batfish's lower psi air systems. Has anyone done any work on this system and do you have any tips on getting it back up and running? One thing we discussed was tapping into the system in each room with a  QD or two for the quick attachment of hoses for pneumatic tools. That would certainly make maintenance easier.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Mk 18 Torpedoes
« on: September 29, 2008, 09:22:11 PM »
Does anyone have a copy of blueprints for Mk. 18 torpedoes. I need all of the dimensions. I have a technology school lined up that's willing to build replica sheet metal torpedoes for class practice...and they'll be free and weigh less than 500 lbs.
