Can you help identify Submarine 110V DC/AC outlets?

Hello All, I am looking to identify the USS Batfish’s 110V DC/AC outlets that are mounted throughout the boat. The look very near like a modern 120VAC twin outlet, like you find in almost any home built in the last 40 or 50 years. The only difference is that the home outlet has a round ground pin, whereas the boat has a flat ground blade. It has three vertical flat blades, where the home outlet has two vertical and then a third round pin.

So I am looking for its name or type in an effort to buy replacement jacks as well as a couple of dozen power plugs to connect things with. Anyone have a source that they would share?

I know it would probably be a better thing if I was to just replace them with standard modern wall jacks, but these are working just fine, and we would like to keep the original appearance anywhere we can.

Thank you.

Submarine Related Chatter / Engine room noise level
« on: January 26, 2014, 02:23:35 AM »
Hello All, I know I can ask some of the craziest questions some times, and this could easley be one of them times. But if nothing else, it might give the old brain matter a little stretch……  :uglystupid2:

I am trying to do a little research on engine room noise on a Fleet Boat of WW2 vintage, namely a Balao class boat with the Fairbanks-Morse Model 38D8-1?8 9-cylinder opposed-piston diesel engines.

To say the least, I know it was LOUD, but what I am looking for is technical data to quantify it.

I am looking for any information that would tell me:

1. The sound level (DB) inside the engine room, at different engine speeds (RPM)?

2. What would the engine speed be at varying different loads on the main battery bus?

3. What would be the frequency of the sound that would be heard at different RPMs of the drive motors?

4. Along similar lines, when one of the engines are running, are they always running at a approximantly fixed speed, to keep the generators in-sync with each other or the line frequency of the boat (~60hz)? If so, what approximant speed (RPM) was that? Then does anyone know what the firing sequence was on one of the engines? Were they sequential (in any order) or where there parallel cylinders firing at any time?

Well let’s see what comes of this posting, I hope it’s interesting.

That would be Rick Dennis, of the USS Batfish. Mr Gilbert is to be commended for all his hard work in making the torpedo project happen, like many others he has done before; but I don't think Rick is calling him Dad just yet!  :2funny:

From The Radio Club of the USS Batfish, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Happy Happy New Year!

Karen,

Tell the Cobia radio crew to be on the lookout for the Batfish as WW2SUB and the Oklahoma BB37 "mast" memorial as WW2OK. We will certainly be on the lookout for them.

USS Batfish (SS-310) / Museum Ships Weekend 2013
« on: May 17, 2013, 11:04:08 AM »
Ahoy Rory, members of the FSAARC, as well as the Amateur Radio community at large!

The USS Batfish (and USS Oklahoma) ARC openly welcome all interested parties to their club activities, formal or not. The Museum Ships Weekend (MSW 2013) event will be taking place in just a couple of weeks on the first weekend of June. Dates and Times are all given in UTC, as June 1 0000 to June 2 2359 for the worldwide event; Local time translates to 7 pm Friday May 31st, through 7pm Sunday June 2ed. Event information can be found at http://www.nj2bb.org/museum/index.html

We would love to have you join us over the MSW13 weekend, and hope that you all would like to operate from the boat or museum park grounds. We will likely have several stations operational, using several bands and modes. We also have the unusual distinction of operating two different calls, one for the USS Batfish, WW2SUB as you know, but also WW2OK for the USS Oklahoma (mast) Memorial which is on the grounds as well. You may operate either or both. Operations are both indoors and out in Field day style, so dress accordingly.

There is the normal museum entrance charge (max $6) for all non sub-club members, those funds are for other museum operation and not for the radio event in any way. Sub club members also function as museum volunteers on various levels; if anyone would be interested in joining us in the preservation of the Museum, submarine or the memory of the people that served in the US Military, just let me know and I would be happy to get you started. After hour’s access is controlled / limited but it is possible. Please contact me directly and let me know what your situation is and I will work with you on it.

As for operating at the event, that should not be a problem, but we must be a little more stringent on some of the rules of operating then some understand. The three rules are as follows:

1.   We are all visitors at the Museum; we must not interfere with the normal operations at the museum. The Public’s safety and enjoyment is as much of our operation as any on the air. They will frequently ask many questions about the radio operation as well as the museum displays; be courteous, even if you don’t know the answer; expect interruptions.
2.   All Radio activates must be coordinated as to band and mode of operation, equipment and antenna installations.
3.   All radio contacts must be logged and copies submitted to event officials prior to leaving. Our logs are compiled and then submitted to NN2JB event organizers to certify the contacts for the certificates. Electronic logging is preferred but if you must use paper, makes sure each page has the basic information that includes the following:
a.   Operator name (your name)
b.   Operator call sign (your call)
c.   Control operator name (if used)
d.   Control operator Call (if used)
e.   Special event station call sign (WW2SUB or WW2OK)
f.   Band or specific Frequency
g.   Mode of operation.

Mitch KC5HWW is the event coordinator for MSW13, but I am the club trustee for the call signs and the club liaison to the museum. You may contact either one of us for further information.

« on: March 24, 2013, 07:52:07 PM »
Permission Granted!

Welcome aboard Rory, I am the club Trustee for the USS Batfish Ham radio Station, WW2SUB. We would love to have you join us anytime. The Radio Club meets the first Saturday of each month at 10AM in the Batfish Museum Meeting room. Feel free to join us anytime. I live about an hour away, and work for a living, so if you want to operate on a specific date and time, then please give me as much heads up as possible so I can do my best to make that happen for you.

The next known operating event should be June 1-2 (UTC) for the Museum Ships Weekend event, but there may be others. You can keep up to date on the radio club at WWW.WW2SUB.org

You can reply here, or email me at trustee@ww2ok.org

Website Updates and Off-Topic Discussion / Re: PHANTOM opens this weekend.

I understand that the boat is the B-39 in San Diego.

I also understand that the movie has a "what if" story line, based on some true events that occurred in 1968 off the cost of Hawaii.

Place your bets folks...... will it be a classic or fodder for Mystery Science Theater 3000?

I just heard that the new Submarine movie PHANTOM will open Friday.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1922685/

It’s a low budget independent, but with Ed Harris as the Skipper..... It could be a good one.

Let hear your feedback on it.
