The Scorpion patrolled the Pacific Ocean for 22 years as an attack submarine of the Soviet navy.

But now the boat is an aging tourist attraction, docked adjacent to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, and its owner claims that the sub is rusting away because the leaseholders of the Queen Mary have refused to maintain the vessel as required under a management agreement.

The submarine’s owner, California-based NewCo Pty Ltd., filed a lawsuit this week naming several previous and current leaseholders of the Queen Mary, the former ocean liner turned into a boutique hotel. The suit asks for $10 million to repair the damage caused to the 45-year-old submarine.

The city of Long Beach owns the Queen Mary but leases the ship and the adjacent land to operate as a tourist attraction.

Urban Commons, a Los Angeles-based real estate and development company that took over the Queen Mary lease in April, said it was looking into the allegations made in the lawsuit.

“While we do not have any involvement with the vessel, we are looking into the matter," the company said in a statement.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, notes that the lease for the Queen Mary and the Scorpion has changed hands several times over the past two decades.

But the lawsuit targets a previous leaseholder, the Garrison Investment Group, saying it had agreed  to pay the owner of the Scorpion $200,000 a year in rent and maintenance costs. The suit contends that Garrison neglected the submarine since 2011 in hopes that the repairs would be so extensive that Garrison could terminate the lease.

A Garrison representative declined to comment.

In addition to rust, grime and peeling paint, the Scorpion is also infested with raccoons, according to the lawsuit. Last June, the neglect caused the submarine to list to the port side, forcing it to close to tourists, the lawsuit claims.

Urban Commons has big plans for the marine complex that could include a $250-million entertainment and retail area with a giant Ferris wheel. The company is working with a task force to come up with ideas for developing the 45 acres surrounding the Queen Mary, now mostly parking lots, as well as for events that will attract more visitors to the area.

Website Updates and Off-Topic Discussion / July 2016 update
« on: July 29, 2016, 05:44:16 PM »
Well friends, I hope you are all doing well.  This forum has seen many changes since its creation.  I thank you all for staying around.

1) I'm sure you read my post earlier about Lockwood Internet Base (LIB) closing down.  I am now an Associate Member of the Mobile Bay Base USSVI.

2) I had to let the domain name saveoursubmarines.com go last year. With the shutting down of LIB, keeping up a website about a base project seemed unnecessary.

3) So many museum submarines are in jeopardy of closing down, Clamagore, Ling, Marlin, and as I did updates today I can't find any info on the Russian submarine B-427. I believe it is closed at this time, and I don't know if there are plans to open it again.

4) Please LIKE and take part in any discussions that come up on the SUBMARINEMUSEUMS.ORG Facebook page. I try to share any interesting things that I see that come up about museum submarines.

5) Any news to share, keep sharing it. I know that BBSes seem to be becoming things of the stone age, but I do like this place.

Sound off! Thank you guys! Let's keep the forum going.

Friends, I sadly report to you that our supporting United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. Base, Lockwood Internet Base, is closing effective July 1, 2015.  They have been long term supporters of this website since its creation.

I am also an Associate member of USSVI through this Base.  Which means that I must find a new Base to be a member of in order to remain a part of USSVI.  Associate members like myself cannot remain with USSVI as a Member-At-Large.  I will likely join the Base somewhat near my location that Tom Bowser is the Base Commander of, Mobile Bay Base.  I may have to find a sponsor within this Base.

I just wanted you all to know.

Submarine Related Chatter / 2015 USSVI Submarine Calendars on sale!
« on: September 02, 2014, 10:10:30 AM »
The United States Submarine Veterans, Inc sell calendars each year to raise money for their operation and projects.  These calendars feature great photos of submarines and list important dates in submarine history, such as loss dates.

They can be ordered by going to http://www.ussvinationalstorekeeper.com/ or by mail as shown in the attached picture.  You can also usually get them from your local USSVI Base.

I do not think they are available for ordering just yet, but will be shortly.  Just wanted to give you all a heads up in case you wanted one.  Sometimes they sell out quickly.

Website Updates and Off-Topic Discussion / Hello and thank you
« on: March 29, 2014, 12:50:22 PM »
Well, when this stop on the internet was formed just over six years ago, I had no idea where it would go.  I had no children yet and one job.  Now, I have two children and two jobs! We have made new friends, new contacts, and seen many friends come and go.

With that said, I'm so thankful for all of you coming here and taking part.  It's wonderful!  I may not be on here as much as I once was, but I am still here, still trying. Thank you for all you do!  I'd love to see a new spurt of activity.  I know Facebook and other social media has taken much new priority over traditional websites and internet forums, but I do believe that websites and forums have a great purpose, such as this place.

Keep on keeping on, let's do this! These are the submarines in your neighborhood!

USS Clamagore (SS-343) / Clamagore to become a reef
« on: November 02, 2013, 04:35:19 PM »

Looks like she will become a reef at best or sold for scrap at worst.  Sad.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The USS Clamagore is nearing the end of its rope at Patriots Point.

The Patriots Point Development Authority plans to hand over the rusting submarine to Reefmakers, a Florida-based organization that specializes in sinking vessels to create artificial reefs.

The Clamagore could be out of Charleston Harbor as soon as next month, said Mac Burdette, executive director of Patriots Point.

Once Reefmakers finds a destination, the sub will be taken from the state-owned tourist attraction and remediated to ensure it won’t harm the environment.

The Clamagore Veterans Association has tried for two years to keep the sub its members served on from heading to the ocean floor, but they couldn’t raise the estimated $4 million.

The 400-member group also was unable to find a municipality or organization to adopt the vessel and fund its upkeep, which would cost at least $250,000 annually, said Bob Dewar, president.

The Patriots Point Development Authority extended the deadline several times to give the association more time to raise money. The agency also helped locate donors, Dewar said.

“Patriots Point, as far as the administration, has gone way above and beyond the call of duty. Previous boards ignored her, and that’s how she got in such bad shape,” Dewar said. “It just comes a time when you have to ask what’s going to be the best thing not just for Patriots Point but for the boat. Submerged, (the sub) is going to last a lot longer.”

A separate group of sub veterans, The Clamagore Restoration and Maintenance Association, also took up the cause. It said it’s not willing to let the sub go down without a fight.

“We’re submarine sailors, we don’t give up. That’s our history,” said spokesman Rick Wise. “When we give up, then we’re usually on the bottom for good.”

The group’s immediate goal is to find a place to keep the sub while they seek to raise restoration money. Wise said he is not convinced that the project would be as expensive as Patriots Point has estimated.

“I agree that it’s going to cost a bit to do it, but whether it’s going to be that much or not, that’s just a number,” he said.

Patriots Point commissioned an independent marine engineer to conduct the assessment.

The state agency can’t afford another expensive vessel repair. It still has to repay a majority of the $9.2 million it borrowed from the state to patch the Laffey warship. The aircraft carrier Yorktown is also deteriorating, and that fix could cost up to $100 million.

“If we had $4 million available, we would choose under our priorities to put it into The Yorktown. It’s not a matter of heart, it’s a matter of business,” Burdette said.

Fundraising experts told Dewar that it would take his group up to five years to raise the money it needed. Meanwhile, Burdette noted that the marine engineer’s report determined the vessel couldn’t withstand a hurricane.

“We’ve given them almost two years to raise the money to restore the Clamagore,” Burdette said. “It’s not been possible and we are not going to take the chance of the Clamagore going through another hurricane season as fragile as she is. It could end up in catastrophic results.”

Burdette said the state agency will work with the Clamagore Veterans Association to create a landside memorial at Patriots Point to honor the sub and its crew.

Wise said his group fears the fate of the submarine if it’s turned over to Reefmakers.

“If it becomes too expensive for them to make it environmentally neutral, then they will sell it as scrap. That’s probably what will happen to it,” he said.

Joe Weatherby with Reefmakers disagreed.

“We save (vessels) from the scrappers,” he said. “Our proposition is to find them a good home,” he said. “We’re all about the dignity of the ships and the veterans who served on them.”

Weatherby said turning the Clamagore into a reef will cost millions of dollars, but that he’s already seen interest from communities who would be willing to cover the cost.
