Title: After Battery Goat Locker
Post by: Mark Sarsfield on August 10, 2010, 03:10:06 PM
I was wondering if any of the museums still had their goat locker area curtained off in the after battery or at least the remnants/evidence of where the curtain would have been installed.

Our goat locker is the five man room at the aft end of forward battery.

As is the Torsk's, you maybe refering to Hogan's Alley and having the forwars Port side with a curtain on it, I don't have any pictures of that only old sea stories that still rattle around in my head from time to time

I noticed that several museums have their medicine cabinet in or near the forward port corner.  I figured that the chiefs would want to be closer to the wash room rather than the noisy mess.

Nothing is ever TOTALLY one way or another, but Goat Lockers on fleet boats were in the FB, not in the AB.  In WWII most AB berthing spaces, including the Hogan's Alley area, did not have curtains. After the war, anything was possible.

Based on 100s of photos and interviews of WW II vets

Okay.  Our source served on our boat in the 50's.  So, maybe they were putting more chiefs on the boats by then.  Also, our FB goat locker only has 4 bunks.

COD's Goat Locker has 5 bunks... but boats like REQUIN which underwent massivd mods during their careers ended up with large Goat Lockers in the AB (when the ATR lost its tubes and became a massive addition berthing space the chiefs had space for tennis courts and a bowling alley!!!   :uglystupid2:

LOL.  I saw Requin's ATR that they converted into a classified (for the time) radio listening post.  All of the radio gear was gone by the time it became a museum.
