The numbers on the drawings you are referring to as "scale units" are actually frame numbers, denoting the hull frames.

USS Torsk (SS-423) / USS Blueback SS581 Visit
« on: October 21, 2015, 09:16:12 AM »
On Thursday 15 October 2015 Charlie and I had the honor of visiting USS Blueback SS581 in Portland, Oregon.

Scott Thingelstad of Blueback gave us the VIP tour and we had a great time. I presented him a Torsk hat and patch as a gift. More pix of the visit at the link below. Enjoy!

USS Torsk (SS-423) / Re: A happy updated on the USS Torsk SS-423

Several of the crew spent this past Saturday on board hosting a visit for a WWII Submarine Veteran and family. This was the first time back aboard in 16 months, and plans are being made to return to normal weekly work activity.

There are several photos on the usstorsk.org forum, but for those of you who haven't seen it yet - NO TEETH (Starboard side only so far)!!!

(Many thanks to Al Freund for the photo)

We haven't abandoned ship, but we haven't yet been back aboard. We're waiting for discussions between our director and HSIB's director to get back on track.

It's been well over a year now. I for one hope things get settled soon.

Thanks for asking and thinking of us

USS Torsk (SS-423) / Happy New Year!
« on: December 31, 2014, 06:53:04 PM »
The following was written by Marvin Schenker, LTJG for the 0000 log entry on 1 January, 1954.

"Today for her we dream" - hopefully soon we as TVA can get back to "and toil producing sweat" as well.......

Happy New Year!

Gil

-----------------

1 January 1954

0000 - 0400 Drydocked in DD#1, Portsmouth NSY

0000 -

This brave fighter's name is TORSK
from under the blue sea
Manned by fine men of whom she is proud,
as they are of she.

Today for her we dream,
and toil producing sweat
So that tomorrow,
her equal will not be met.

We are submariners,
our efforts will ne'r cease
And this night,
we wish the world a lasting peace.

Topside the Winter winds
are cold and frisky,
While we have next year
to celebrate with Whisky

So enter 1954,
and spread good cheer,
And to all hands,
A Happy New Year!

Signed - M. L. Schenker, LTJG USN

There have been discussions with the Museum Director, questions raised, some answered and others not yet answered.

Historic Ships in Baltimore just put Constellation into drydock, and their focus is there at the moment. Not sure when we will get clarification on the remaining items or if/when we'll be back aboard.

So Rowsom said the policy will change and we are to be patient? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm - I wonder how many of us will be left once that policy change is in effect.

Anyway...

Museum Submarine Discussion / Re: Who is pissed at Batfish?
« on: July 08, 2014, 09:25:47 AM »
Mark,

I want to say thank you for the many years you have put in a Batfish. I understand where you are and feel your struggles and frustrations. After 17 years at Torsk, we are facing our own set of issues and only time will tell what will come of it. In the end, what suffers the most is the boat herself.

Again, thank you for all you have done!
