On Thursday 15 October 2015 Charlie and I had the honor of visiting USS Blueback SS581 in Portland, Oregon.

Scott Thingelstad of Blueback gave us the VIP tour and we had a great time. I presented him a Torsk hat and patch as a gift. More pix of the visit at the link below. Enjoy!

USS Torsk (SS-423) / Happy New Year!
« on: December 31, 2014, 06:53:04 PM »
The following was written by Marvin Schenker, LTJG for the 0000 log entry on 1 January, 1954.

"Today for her we dream" - hopefully soon we as TVA can get back to "and toil producing sweat" as well.......

Happy New Year!

Gil

-----------------

1 January 1954

0000 - 0400 Drydocked in DD#1, Portsmouth NSY

0000 -

This brave fighter's name is TORSK
from under the blue sea
Manned by fine men of whom she is proud,
as they are of she.

Today for her we dream,
and toil producing sweat
So that tomorrow,
her equal will not be met.

We are submariners,
our efforts will ne'r cease
And this night,
we wish the world a lasting peace.

Topside the Winter winds
are cold and frisky,
While we have next year
to celebrate with Whisky

So enter 1954,
and spread good cheer,
And to all hands,
A Happy New Year!

Signed - M. L. Schenker, LTJG USN

USS Torsk (SS-423) / Memorial Day Ceremony Pix
« on: May 28, 2011, 10:13:22 PM »
Today aboard Torsk we held our annnual Tolling of the Boats ceremony. I've included a few pix below.

The ceremony was split into three parts, taking place at 1300, 1400 and 1500. Members of the Torsk Volunteer Association together wtih representatives of Chesapeake Base USSVI read the names of the lost boats and rang the ships bell for each. The large flag flying aft is in honor of Darrin Singer's grandfather.

The last shot is of some of the Torsk Volunteers aboard for the day.

USS Torsk (SS-423) / Torsk is Home!
« on: March 22, 2011, 08:21:23 AM »
Torsk arrived home at her berth in the Inner Harbor on Monday around 1400.

The crew went aboard on Sunday afternoon to spend the night aboard the boat and maintain watches during the dry dock flooding. Good thing we did - the boat took a 10 degree port list after coming off the blocks around 0100, and required some work to move ballast in order to correct the list!

Everything was fixed and we had a wonderful afternoon for the ride home on Monday. I have posted a large album of pix on Facebook, but have included a few below. One was taken just after they opened the 36" flood valves in the dock caisson. Another shows the boat with the port list. Kind of weird walking around her when she was like that!

Thanks to all of you here for your interest and support during the seven weeks in dock.

Regards,

Gil

Another busy work day in dry dock today. Lots of work accomplished, including cleanout of trash under the superstructure, a washdown with a fire hose, torpedo tube inspection, more prep work on the prop for removal, and inspection of the GDU (Garbage Disposal Unit).

A shot of repair work on Constellation.

How many of you have ever had the chance to sit where I am sitting?  ;)

USS Torsk (SS-423) / Torsk on Feb 26th
« on: February 27, 2011, 08:04:15 PM »
This past Saturday, a large group of the local crew got the chance to visit Torsk in dry dock. For many, this was the first time seeing her high and dry!

The first photo, taken by Ellie Bjerkaas, is the crew in front of the boat. I took the rest of the shots. I really like the photo taken directly behind her stern. It shows the shape of her hull quite well.

There are 75 photos in the Facebook album for Saturday, so take a look when you can.

Plans for this coming week include completing the welding repairs, and painting the hull.

We won't be undocking yet. Constellation still has quite a bit of repair work on her hull that needs to be done. The last photo shows her starboard side as of Saturday. Probably another two weeks or so.

USS Torsk (SS-423) / More Dry Dock Pix
« on: February 16, 2011, 08:23:37 PM »
A few pix of work on Torsk today, from Jim Reeb.

The shutter over torpedo tube 5 has been removed and laid on the dock floor,  the access plate over tube 3 removed, and welding repair on the blanking plate over Main Ballast Tank 1 flood port is complete.

The area around the tubes, both forward and aft, have the greatest corrosion damage. The repair will take a few days to complete.

More pix as I get them!

Our Pier Manager, Jim Reeb, took Frank Morgan and myself into the dry dock today to do a photo survey of the hull. I've posted 30+ pix over on Facebook, but here are a few from today's visit.
