USS Batfish (SS-310) / Plummeting numbers
« on: August 23, 2023, 09:39:12 PM »
As you can see from the attached chart, the number of visits dropped around the same time I quit updating the Batfish website.  I'm still getting around 7K hits per year but nowhere near the mid 40K hits I was getting.  I've started updating the site again and hope to get the numbers back up.  Stop by and see what I'm doing.  Keep coming back to see the updates.  It's slow, so be patient.  www.ussbatfish.com

USS Batfish (SS-310) / USS Batfish Facebook Group
« on: August 23, 2023, 09:34:11 PM »
To compliment my Batfish website (www.ussbatfish.com), I've created a Batfish Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1283019579030223).  My goal is to use it for several things such as:

1. A guestbook proxy so I don't have to re-create the one I previously had
2. A message board for all things history-related about the Batfish (SS310).  It's not about the park, they have their own FB group page.
3. A real-time information exchange on the history of the Batfish and her crew.

Just started it, so come over and follow it.  I have a whopping 5 members at the time of this post.  LOL

3
Looks dead, wonder if anyone is still around to revive it.  Although I'm not back at the Batfish, I am getting ready for several things Batfish.  Would love to reconnect to old friends and make some new ones.

Give a reply...if I don't hear from anyone, I'll post my batfish email address and you can hit me up there if/when you discover this post.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Re: ...?

Most ALL of the forums/BBS sites that I visit have seen a decrease in activity with the onset of Facebook and other new versions of easy social media.

I run/maintain the Batfish website.  I used to post "happenings at the park" on the page, but now I don't because I'm not told of what's going on.  The park has decided to go with their Facebook page to post these events.  I'm about ready to strip all the park stuff off the website and say something like "to know more about the park, visit their Facebook page" and then put a link to it.  I keep getting emails about hours and events and other stuff that I clearly state on the site to email the park and put the parks contact info on the site.  I get tired of having to forward to Brent so I just delete the emails now.  Not my fault if people can't read.

Quote
However, I still don't understand why nearly all of the past contributors have left this site. I understand the frustrations many have had with some of the museums, but that does not explain why most have abandoned this site.

Not sure if you've ever volunteered at a park or not.  But unless you have experienced the crap volunteers put up with from mis-managed parks, then it's hard to explain.  It was really hard to walk away, but it came to a point where I had to.  the reasons are posted elsewhere here.  I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I had to cut all ties and move on or it would just eat at me.  I've moved on to other things I like to do and would rather spend my time doing that than re-hashing Batfish stuff.  I was there about 15 years and in all that time we did do good stuff, but the politics never changed and that's what wore me out.

Not sure if I answered anyone's questions.  I really don't visit this site anymore...but I do stop in once in a while.  I feel I've burned some bridges and when I do check in, there isn't any activity so I quickly scan and leave.

USS Batfish (SS-310) / Video of Batfish Rescue

This is the same video I got from one of the actual persons that was rescued so I know it's legit...

Not sure I'd pay that price for the video.

Anyway, just an FYI...

They also have one claiming to be from the Batfish periscope, but I can't verify it as being actual or not...

Well - thought I'd add my 2 cents on this.

Quote
The volunteer situation is rough. In my current position it has been rough being tossed in a situation where quite a few volunteers felt they lacked direction and solid leadership. It is definitely hard to repair wounds overnight.

We didn't feel we lacked direction...there was no direction.  The volunteer groups at the sub (Relief Crew, BLHA, HAMS) all operated pretty much independently of each other.  All did good stuff for the sub/park and former mgmt. basked in our accomplishments.  Basically, we made him look good.  In addition, we didn't ask you to solve the problems overnight.  We are/were aware of the mess left by former mgmt.  We understand/understood you needed time to get your feet underneath you.  Maybe our over-eagerness seemed pushy to you...but we were happy to see a change and the opportunities that comes with change.

Quote
At other museums and libraries I either volunteered or worked at, the volunteers and staff seemed so territorial, sometimes forgetting the greater good.

There may be some territorial issues...but they are minor and I don't think anyone of the groups has lost focus on the big picture.  What I saw was an apathetic board that didn't show up for functions...I saw a foundation that would not release money or if they did, went to minor things (archival stuff) instead of important things (mast).  I also saw former mgmt. lose focus when cupid hit him with an arrow.  His thoughts were in Arizona instead of the park.  How else can you explain the park being closed during posted operational hours...and patrons emailing me bitching about it...only to come and find out the mgmt. closed the park and took off for Arizona?  No, if anyone lost sight of the big picture...it was former mgmt.

Quote
Yes, I have actually talked to nearly all of the volunteers and the former park manager to try figure out the problem.

What we need is an official meeting...not emails and PMs.  Emotion and intent is hard to ascertain over those mediums.  You need to hear from us...in person...what our frustrations are.  All I will say is that things were not handled well on both sides.  The website and letter were the result of months of frustration trying to deal with former mgmt. who would not work with the persons involved...who would not present anything to the board...and in fact discouraged us attending board meetings.  Now we know why...because the report to the board was that everything was OK...even though the park started to deteriorate based on website photos and former mgmt. didn't want the truth out that the volunteers were doing most of the heavy lifting at the park.  Once we left...it was all on former mgmt. and the freebee help he had.  Pictures don't lie.  And I'll agree with Jim on this one...talking to the former park manager isn't the answer because he was the reason, at least for the relief crew, that we walked away.  (On a side note, I'm still waiting for an explanation on why he is now the park historian...a position I held for 4 years.  I've not had a formal correspondence of my dismissal from this position).

putting A/C on the boat

I do know that the former mgmt. is directly responsible for the departure of Vaughn and Mary.  Vaughn got all the A/C units/supplies donated and then he installed it all himself.  The former manager upset Mary which upset Vaughn and they left.  Vaughn told me that he stopped by to check the units and the former manager told Vaughn that he "wasn't authorized to install the A/C units.".  Vaughn told me that he told the former manager that he would be happy to remove them at which point the former manager backed off.  I can't understand why he would treat Vaughn and Mary like that.

Only one person is actually banned and that in itself is something that took forever to figure out if it was official or just claimed by previous management.

Ah...like Obama's transparency claim.  One person is banned.  We don't know who...that person has not been notified.  Is it official or not?  Who knows.  It's like "hey, let's build a bridge...but I'm not giving you any wood to build it with".

The board and former mgmt. got butt-hurt.  Yeah, this might not have been the best method to use.  But the banned person tried to work with the former management but apathy got in the way.  Frustration took over and the website and letter were the result.  What's done is done.  Instead of being reactionary, the board needs to take a look at what's going on at the park.  Either fix it or get off the board.  After all, isn't this why they serve?  Or is it all a resume-building smoke screen.  Everyone needs to sit down...discuss what's best for the sub/park...lift the ban...ask the volunteers back.  All I know is that people aren't going to wait forever for those in power to figure it out.  There are other places that want/need volunteers.  And I know others are looking at them very closely.  Balls in your court.  But I forget...this is Muskogee.  The board won't budge and the foundation won't part with any money until a certain person dies.  And in the end...the park and submarine loses.

Hate me...disagree with me...love me...I don't care.  I've invested time (since 1998) and an untold amount of my own money to that place.  I've seen a lot of managers and board members come and go.  Some good...some mediocre...some horrible.  I've weathered it all.  But now I am about fed up with the freaking politics...and I know others are too.

I've voiced my concerns other places here.  I get the general feeling that no one cares.  And if no one cares...then why should I invest more time and money?  This is my last post.  I'm tired of it all and have other things I want to do.  I will keep the Batfish website up because I did it for the crew and the submarine.  The park pages were always secondary.  The domain name is paid for another 5 years.  I'll re-evaluate then.

Cheers,

Mark

Just wanted to share a couple of posts that I received from the family of a couple of our BATFISH WW2 vets.  This is the reason I volunteered and the reason I started the Batfish website.  These statements speak for themselves.

Quote
"To you who have devoted such effort towards preserving memories of this fine boat and her crew, I want to make sure you know that you are appreciated.  Bless you for your dedication.  The website gets better and better, and from the pictures on site, it appears that people from the local community and beyond have put there own time and effort into a monument that they have come to respect, understand, and relate to, for reasons that speak well of them, as Americans.  It is no easy task to promote and preserve a massive chunk of tubular steel resting (and always rusting) in a dry river bed, but you as webmaster, the working volunteers, and those who went before you have endeavored to do just that.  You obviously realize that it is more than a massive chunk of steel, especially to those who put her to sea for 7 war patrols, and during her years as a reserve boat following the war.  Yours is a labor of respect for those men living and passed, sentimental devotion to their sacrifices, and honest patriotism.  So honest, because there is no reward for your efforts beyond the satisfaction of knowing that what you have done and will continue to do helps preserve a small piece of big history.   Thank you, and may you get a million hits on your website, and may the entire free world pass through Muskogee, sooner or later."  (Tue, 22 May 2001, Curt Hingson, son of Lt. J.M. Hingson, Batfish commissioning officer)

Here is another:

Quote
"Please give the volunteers, the ones we met and those we didn't, Anne's and my sincere appreciation for their service to the Memorial. We all do things for different reasons but let them know the kids of Jake Fyfe expressly thank them for their dedication and hard work. It is quite obvious that without the volunteers, there likely wouldn't be a War Memorial featuring the USS Batfish." (Monday, 15 May 2006, Jay Fyfe, son of Batfish skipper #2 John K. Fyfe)

My sincere thanks for all of those that came out and served in our "Relief Crew".  Not only my thanks...but you can also share in the accolades above.

Submarine Related Chatter / New Book: How to Pilot a Submarine
« on: July 22, 2014, 03:33:49 PM »
I just stumbled onto this while surfing at lunch...not sure of the contents but is due out next month...

Quote
How do you pilot a submarine? The US Navy based this book on the USS Perch and it gives in depth detail on all aspects of submarine work.  The training aid for the US Submarine fleet, How to Pilot a Submarine gives us an idea of just what life was like underwater and the various tasks a submariner would have to do. Restricted and unavailable till now, this is an ideal gift for the man in your life, who will learn how to crash dive, how to maintain the engines and batteries of a World War Two submarine and, most importantly, how to fire the torpedoes and to deal with life underwater.

Maybe required reading before Darrin's next School of the Boat.

Published by the US Navy, this was their training manual through the Second World War and into the 1950s. A truly fascinating glimpse at the shadowy, underwater world of a submariner

Not sure how this differs from the NAVPERS series.

Brent...I sent you a PM.  Please read it and get back to me when you can.

USS Batfish (SS-310) / Re: Batfish bow planes are now rigged out
« on: July 20, 2014, 01:39:27 PM »
Hi Darrin...I'm way late on this and I apologize.  As you are well aware, I've been away for a while and am only now getting back on the forum.  Then I had to find this one photo of the placard among literally a thousand photos of the Batfish...then I had some generic name for the photo and it wasn't in the folder I thought it was.  Man, I need to get organized.

Anyway, below is the placard I got from the Drum.  Again, many thanks to Tom for helping learn the ropes.  Thanks to Ed and Mark S. who helped me with the manual labor.

Sorry again for the delay.

Lance - the Batfish/War Memorial Park FB page was started by Rick.  After a while, I asked to help moderate it to put Batfish history on it that was date relative.  Soon afterwards, Lyle Lookingbill (a.k.a. "Doc") joined the ranks of moderator.  It wasn't long afterwards that I noticed some of my posts being deleted.  It didn't take a genius to figure what was going on.  I asked to be removed as moderator and told Rick why.  He reluctantly agreed.  In addition, Doc wanted access to my Batfish website...I told him no.  I don't know who is doing the FB page now (new guy, Doc, Rick).  Some stuff is Batfish related, but most of what is posted is copied from somewhere else such as Wikipedia.  That's a bad place to get reliable information...universities won't let you cite that as a source.

As for the park...I can't and won't say more than I have.  The ball is in the new guy's court...I'm waiting for a call or email that doesn't seem to be coming.

Thanks Fred and Darrin.

The Batfish crew (both WWII and 2nd Commissioning) have been nothing but wonderful to me and to talk to.  In all  my time at the Batfish, I've only seen two snotty vets.  One I described griping about us out in the heat working on the deck while he was in the A/C building.  The other was part of the Batfish board who had a ego problem.  These two were not Batfish vets.

I always assumed the Batfish vets were happy with us.  Why would they present Ed, me and the late Barre McGowan with these plaques? (see image below)?

My problem is on the managerial level and above.  The vets and their family have been nothing but kind and gracious to the volunteers.

Well...I'm not sure where to begin.  I've held my mouth shut (on this issue on volunteers) but now I feel the need to speak out because things are happening or have happened to me that require some explanation.  For years I've had a problem with the Batfish board's apparent apathy and the Batfish Foundation's tight reins on the money.  Here lately, I'm upset with my treatment from park management.  This does not apply to the new guy because I don't know him nor have I heard from him.  So...here goes my last salvo, guaranteed to burn that last bridge to the Batfish.  Frankly, I've sick of all of it at this point and my wife suggests I permanently walk away.  I'm considering following her advice.  So...here goes.

Most of you have hopefully read my rant on the USS Oklahoma mast currently on the grounds at the Muskogee War Memorial.  And you understand the lack of effort in preserving it.  My finger is pointed directly at the former management (who always had a plan but never acted on it), the foundation (who must be the ones prioritizing the release of funds since no one can explain why the mast issue hasn't been addressed), and the board (with their apparently apathy and lack of direction).  Now a bit more about me, hopefully tying this all together.

Back in mid 2008, I approached Rick about being the park military historian (non-salaried, volunteer position).  I had been at the park for 10 years and was in the middle of my master's degree in military history.  Rick agreed to do it as an intern-type position until I graduated.  I agreed and began working on my book, scheduling work days, updating the website, etc..  Everything was rolling along until an ex-submariner showed up and made his own badge and claimed to be the "ship's historian".  I asked Rick about this and was told in an email dated 7/14/2012:

Quote
[he] made his own badges.  You are still the ships historian and will remain as such.  I would have preferred the title of “Docent”, but they were already at the engravers.   Please do not take this personally.  No one intended to cross any lines.

Well, nothing was done about it on the other persons end. Rick waffled on it as he always does when a personnel decision had to be made.  I realized nothing would be done about it.  Anyway, I continued on in my historian and volunteer coordinator rolls.  However, as volunteer coordinator, I could not get others to help me coordinate work and let me know what was going on.  I had no plans to "lord over" anyone or "boss them around", I simply wanted to compile what was being done, who was doing it, and estimated completion times.  I was continually frustrated and I gave up and resigned.  By this time most of my "Relief Crew" volunteers had left and we were left with semi-annual BLHA events and some random days by the radio guys.

I took some time off to see if my view was jaded or if things were as bad as I was thinking them to be.  I've corresponded with others offline to compare notes.  I toured other museums to see what was working and what wasn't.  My conclusions indicated that nothing had really changed in 15 years of my working at the Batfish.  Yeah, we did some good stuff (deck, 40mm, bunks, etc...) but the overall feel of the place was the same.  So I decided to stay away and find something else to do.  However, my thoughts always strayed back to the Batfish.

Then all the issues with the Save the Batfish website surfaced and correctly shows that malaise and general apathy at the park.  I was embarrassed at the conditions I saw.  I wasn't sure what to do.  While trying to figure it all out, it was pointed out to me by a third party, that the museum management tried to have me banned from the park but had no evidence I was involved.  I've discussed that elsewhere.  So, that brings me to the presents...where I'm no longer the volunteer coordinator...and I'm not sure that I was welcome at the park.  Then I see this from the July 16 Muskogee Phoenix:

Quote
“There’s no job settled there, yet,” Dennis said, adding that he plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in history. He said he will continue working with the Batfish as historian.

http://www.muskogeephoenix.com/local/x1736715556/Couple-marry-aboard-Batfish

So it seems I've also been replaced as the park historian without even an email or phone call.  And this after Rick told me I was the historian as shown above.  So the question is...did Rick self appoint himself or did the new guy appoint Rick...not knowing that I am/was the historian?

Let's look at qualifications.  The submariner w/ the badge: not sure if he has had any college courses in history or military history.  Service doesn't always equal historical knowledge.  Rick: currently earning a B.S. in history.  Mark: M.A. in military history with 15 years at the park.  Something sounds fishy.

I also noted in the same newspaper link some of "Rick's" accomplishments at the sub:

Quote
During Rick Dennis’ tenure, the Batfish received new lighting, new footings and a mooring line. In 2013, the City of Muskogee Foundation granted funding for improvements to the museum’s Walk of Honor as well as a media and video system.

No mention of the big projects from the volunteers such as the new deck and the boat's interior A/C system all donated and installed by Vaughn.  No, what was listed is foundation funded projects.  I can't help but wonder why the USS Oklahoma mast wasn't listed as an accomplishment?  My guess is that it's a failure of management and he didn't want that brought up.

Another issue I have is a post on the Park's Facebook page:

Quote
As a reminder, The best way for our museum to advertise is through word of mouth and our friends telling their friends about us. Please share your museum experiences with your friends and family.

Really? What about the www.ussbatfish.com website?  According to today's stats (see image below), the website has had so far this month 2846 visitors at 1 pm central time.  Is that anywhere close to the Facebook total?  Hell, the park FB page doesn't' even have that many people following it.  Does the FB admin (is it Lyle or is it the new guy?  Who knows?) know I do the website?  Are they even aware of the website?

Anyway, the volunteers (Relief Crew and BHLA) have made a huge impact to the park.  To have them and me treated this way is beyond pathetic.  If I'm no longer wanted there, have the cajones to tell me either face to face, email or call me.  Like I've said other places...and you can see it by browsing the forum...the volunteers have done a lot for the park.  I'm as baffled as Darrin first stated as to why volunteers are treated the way were are.

Well, the bridge is on fire...people are mad at me...and I'm not sure if I'm welcome at the park or not.  Don't know what the new guy has been told about me, not sure if he's aware that I do the website, his greatest advertising tool that I do for free (for them).  I think I'm going to take my wife's advise and turn the page.  There are other places that want volunteers and frankly I'm tired of trying.  There is too much strife and backstabbing.  In closing, I want to say thanks to all my Relief Crew who came out and helped.  And thanks to my Forum friend Fred for his kind words:

Quote
That being said, I also have to give some props to Mark Allen at the Batfish for leading a stellar volunteer effort

I've enjoyed it...but I will not be treated this way.  If Rick wants to be historian...go for it.  Maybe he'll do what's being done on the FB page...cut and paste from Wikipedia.  Yeah...that's real investigative history.  I'll put up their history against my two books any day of the week.

Flood negative...I'm going deep.
