FER,
Thanks for visiting our boat.  Glad you enjoyed your visit.  If any of you submarine enthusiasts plan a visit, let me know and I'll try to arrange to open the conning tower, pump room, lower engine flats, and electric motor room.  Most everything is intact.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Re: Torpedo pusher photos & dimensions

This pusher looks a little different than the one in the forward torpedo room of the Silversides in Muskegon.  Were these used routinely 'cause I've never seen one in any of the torpedo room video?  Charley Roesch

Silverside's main diesels 3 & 4 are in good running condition and are run every Memorial Day.  They start right up like new.  Battle ready.

The new museum building for the Great Lakes Memorial and Museum has been built adjacent to the USS Silversides on the beautiful Muskegon Lake channel within sight of Lake Michigan.  We are gradually adding new displays and we have a superb new director, Bryan Hughes.  Our recent hull ultrasound shows the hull to be in good condition.  And our main diesels 3 & 4 are running sweet as ever.  So if you're in the neighborhood, stop by and check out the new museum.javascript:void(0);

The Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum (USS Silversides) website is under construction.  Anyone interested in purchasing a copy of our 90 minute virtual tour DVD or our photo CD containing some 250 labeled photos can call the museum at 231-755-1230 directly (if the website is not working).  I encourage anyone with questions about the Silversides to contact me directly at croesch@comcast.net

Museum Submarine Discussion / torpedoes

We are completing our new museum building and working on the displays.  One project is restoring the cut-away Mk 14 torpedo.  It is missing the gyro steering gear and depth controls.  But a cursory inspection of one of our intact torpedoes indicates that it has the missing parts.  So I plan to remove the access panel over those parts, remove the parts, and install them on our cut-away display torpedo.  But I am just a doctor so I don't really know what I am doing.  Any suggestions?

Here is a photo of a periscope on display at the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum (USS Silversides SS236, Muskegon, Michigan).  We are looking for replacement parts to restore the optics to function.  Any suggestions?  Charley Roesch, croesch@comcast.net.

I serve on the Board of Directors for the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum, the submarine Silversides, SS236, in Muskegon, Michigan.  I also work as a volunteer on the boat doing various nuts and bolts maintenance and I maintain our audio/video systems on board.  However, I have no Navy experience and I am mostly self taught on Gato boats (with a lot of help from our engine room vets).  Currently we are collecting funds for both a dry docking and the building of the new museum building.  A recent hull ultrasound shows the hull, sitting in fresh water, to be in good condition.  The museum building construction is well under way as of March, 2008.  As of today, my current projects are to restore electrical power to the Christmas tree and repair the radio room door.  We have produced a 90 minute DVD virtual tour of the boat emphasizing the mechanical aspects, which I can provide free to other museums.  Our main diesels 3 and 4 remain operational for our Memorial Day ceremonies.  What we need most is a volunteer electrician.

Submarine Related Chatter / Christmas tree

The Silversides Christmas tree is two separate panels each with its own rheostat.  The right side suddenly quit working.  A single I.C. panel circuit breaker in maneuvering is on and we have 110 volts at the I.C. panel.  Would the two panels have separate fuses on the I.C. panel?  Charley Roesch, croesch@comcast.net

Hello from the USS Silversides, SS236, in Muskegon Michigan.  The Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum is alive and well and currently building a new permanent museum building.  I serve on the Board of Directors and try to learn as much as possible about submarines.  Currently, my main job at the sub is keeping the onboard audio/video systems working.  Otherwise, I'm a semi-retired anesthesiologist.  Anyone with questions about the Silversides, send me a note at croesch@comcast.net.  We have produced a 90 minute detailed video tour of the Silversides and a photo CD with 256 labeled photos if anyone is interested.
