Title: Dec. 7th
Post by: Travis McLain on December 05, 2008, 11:52:53 AM
Dec. 7th is coming up, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any planned memorial events going on around the country that might be televised?

It is a date which not many people today know about, as I have said previously, one kid in my high school had no idea what it was, and one kid thought we attacked the Japanese on that day.

Rick, is there any way you can hold a small memorial on Sunday, even if it is just a moment of silence?

Most would be local.  Even the one at Pearl Harbor doesn't get much coverage anymore which is kind of sad. :-[

This has been on my mind.  Unfortunately I do not have a major event planed.   A moment of silence is a good idea though.

This thread got me wondering.  While much of these events will just be local with little or no coverage.  I finally found a few links that might help.  The key was finding the right words to search on - Officially Sunday will be Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day - that is what you need to search on.  But here are a few links to start including the Google search I used at the end.

We are supposed to be doing a service here in Norfolk on Sunday, I am planning on attending this event and hopefully will get some pics from it. I don't know if Torsk is doing a memorial service on Saturday or not, this weekend is a very unique one for me because my step-grandfather rode DE's during WWII and was a Pearl Harbor survivior. On Sunday his flag (that he flew for very special occasions is going to be flown once more, he last flew it in the early 80's and I didn't recieve it until 4 years ago and I have flown it every Dec 7th in his memory along with various times of the year in his honor). To answer the question before it is asked, yes he survived and then went on to fight in Korea and I think Viet Nam, sadly he passed due to lung cancer in the early 80's...

RIP Chief Douglas Nimon,  You may be gone but you have not been forgotten

On top of it all, it's SUNDAY on December 7th this year.  Kind of chilling.

Nice work, John.  Back in '66 I did a graveyard watch on the Memorial.  I must have read the names several times and looked at the empty turret for the #2 gun.  It really got to me.
