I call this my "Manitowoc Bible".  Why? First it was written by a Manitowoc Submarine Commander, secondly it covers the entire Manitowoc story in a single book from the beginnings of the shipyards, details of the consruction of the 28 submarines, transporting them from the Great Lakes to the Gulf, and their war records.  I found that it had more "little known facts than I dreamed possible.  For instance the first sub Peto had the cylinder liners and rod bearings on all four diesel engines replaced while enroute downstream.  I never knew how many time the Peto and other subs were ran aground in the river. I never knew that all 28 subs were towed by the same Tug Boat the "Minnesota" and she was built in 1921 and almost sank on the first trip.  I didn't know the tug pilots operated from  memory, without any maps of the rivers.  I never knew the floating drydock was beached on her first return trip ,and the bow modified by plates and other parts prefabricated at Manitowoc, and shipped by rail to a downstream location.  I never knew the pieriscope and other structure parts that were removed for bridge clearances were hastily reinstalled before reaching New Orleans because of the German propaganda claim that one of their subs was successful going up the Miissisippi River for some distance and the peto had tobe prepared to fight if needed.  I never knew that the subs discovered by accident the fact that radios continued to receive while submerged in Lake Michigan because of the fresh not salt water.  Well that's only a few things in the book.  Because it is so well written both submariners as well as others can understand the text.  Also several nice photographs are included.  Rontini lists the book, and it is offered by phone from the Wisconsin Maritime Museum gift shop  (920) 684 0218

In my previous post  I neglected to mention an important fact about the book.  Admiral Nelson was very adept at inserting liberal amounts of humor in his writings.  That makes it almost impossible to put the book down once you start reading.  Here is an example:  When negotiating a very sharp bend in the river the PETO and drydock  got sideways and ended up 70 yards or so in a farmers corn field. It was there several days tied up to an old willow tree waiting for the water level to drop.  "The farmer in whose corn field the drydock sat, a Mr. Peacock, was reportied as boasting that he was the only farmer in the world that had a submarine in his corn field.  It was rumored that he was charging admission for prople to pass through his property to view the submarine".

That would be great... email me at ssr481@verizon.net. I've got a lot of material from the Argentinian side of things... especially in 1982.. haven't had a chance to really get into the CATFISH side...

Hey everyone, I just picked up this -so far- really good and informative/historical book. It is called "The Depths Of Courage" by Flint Whitlock and Ron Smith (a WWII subvet) it was published last November. Flint Whitlock is from Denver, Co, I may have to try and contact him. O, by the way, the Batfish is referenced in here, and there are pictures of her galley and crews mess in the book.

Here is the link to the publishers info on the book: http://us.penguingroup.com/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,9780425217436,00.html (http://us.penguingroup.com/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,9780425217436,00.html)

KOEFV: It says that Clay Deckers stories/ info is in the book.

This is an after thought.  The Muskogee War Memorail is starting to develope a military library.  Long term is to develope a library of both hard and soft copy books tha twill become available to the public about military history.  The short term goal is to get books and lots of them.  We currently have a large number of good sub books.  I cannot give titles or numbers at this time and that has not bee cataloged.   We are still trying to get the front of the house cleaned up.

Send any extra copies our way.  We would love to have them.

Rick

In the book, it details how Ron Smith got the nickname Warshot. He was a torpedoman in the Aft room, and fired a torpedo right as the tdc spindle missed 2 notches on the torpedo, and said to himself it is going to miss, yet that torpedo is the only one that hit the ship, and it sank, so the crew called him warshot and the captain congratulated him on the shot. Pretty cool story.

First of all, thanks for the updates.  I've modified my original post to reflect the additions.

Second, I have finished reading Batfish, the Champion "Submarine-Killer" Submarine of World War II by Hughston E. Lowder and Jack Scott.  This was a wonderful, wonderful book.  Not too long, not too short.  It doesn't repeat a bunch of the "whys" and "how-comes" that so many books do.  This book is about the Batfish, period.  The last chapter is really great too, which talks of how the boat was acquired by Muskogee to become a museum.

When I got to page 243 (the book has 244 pages) I read this paragraph:

"She is perhaps the only submarine in the world one can view almost from the bottom up.  And with her keel four feet into the moist sand, electrolysis works like acid upon her bottom.  Unless lifted onto a drydock, she'll be rusted through in twenty years or so."

After reading that paragraph, I immediately flipped back to the front pages to search for a copyright date....1980!   ???

Thanks for all the great comments about my submarine books!  Some news:

We are hoping to be able to announce THE ICE DIARIES in paperback after the first of the year.  The book has done very well and reamins on many of Amazon's bestseller lists.  More on that book can be found here:  http://donkeith.com/index.php?p=13

I have a new book coming in late March 2010.  WAR BENEATH THE WAVES tells the story of the USS Billfish and a 15-hour depth charge attack that brought out the worst but also the absolute best in her crew.  You can go here to learn more: http://donkeith.com/index.php?p=2

Glad to see so many other authors are working on books about the various boats.  We MUST tell these stories!

Tom:

I was down your way for a signing in October in Fairhope and in November at the Junior League Christmas Jubilee but did not get a chance to get by the Drum either trip.  I did ask the Barnes & Noble folks if they were still supplying FINAL PATROL to the gift shop but they weren't sure there had been any copies sent over there lately.  I still think the gift shop can buy them from a distributor cheaper and make more for the gift shop.

I brag about you and all the work you do on the boat all the time.  Hope the "Old Girl" is hanging together and that millions are going through her "innards."  I hope to see you all soon.  Good to hear from you and the best of the holidays to everyone there at the Alabama and Drum!

You're right, Blackwing.  If none of us post, the posts get old!  I've heard good things about the Batfish book but I have not yet read it.  I've WRITTEN more books lately than I have READ!  But that's the nature of what I do.

Since my last post, I've done a book on Commander Dudley "Mush" Morton and the USS Wahoo titled Undersea Warrior.  See more at http://www.donkeith.com/index.php?p=18.  Commander (USN Retired) George Wallace and I have also published our second novel, a submarine thriller, Firing Point.  Details at http://www.donkeith.com/index.php?p=20.  It is still in pre-production as a major motion picture.  But if Hollywood was a U.S. fleet boat, we'd be speaking Japanese now!

I saw the Drum from a distance a while back and it looks like Tom Bowser and the crew are doing some great work over there.  Does anyone have updates on Clamagore and Cavalla?

Hi Don,
I must have missed your December post. I don't think the gift shop has your book, I will check tomorrow. We are working in and on the fuel/ballast tanks, been in them two years now and will most likely spend another three years in them, great fun.

We have a new book coming out soon called The War Below by James Scott, it is about the Drum, the Silversides and the Tang. It is a good read.

Tom, that is great!  Glad you are still in those tanks and keeping the old girl pretty and painted up.

On the books, I lost contact with the lady at the Barnes & Noble in Daphne.  She was the one that was checking with the gift shop to see if they needed copies of FINAL PATROL.  I still think the gift shop could get better prices from whatever distributor they use for other books and make more money that way for the museum.  Let me know if they get the book back in and next time I'm down that way I'll come by and sign any copies they have in stock.  That might help them sell, too.  The gift shop can just tell the distributor they want to order ISBN 0451219511.  They can buy them through a distributor cheaper than I can!

All the best, Tom, and it is great to hear from you.

I responded to your submarine books but I can't find it so I'll try again.  Two books you can but tell the story about the USS Grunion.  The Grunion was sunk in the Bering sea July 30th, 1942, all hands lost. The titles of the books are:  " Fatal Dive" and "We Remember  Them: A Biographical Supplement for Fatal Dive".
