Title: Server issues
Post by: Lance Dean on May 23, 2008, 11:05:40 PM
Just so you know, the server that this site is on is located in Florida.  Apparently they suffered a power outage early this morning and are thus still trying to get everything back online smoothly.

This site has been up and down all day, and that's why.  Hopefully it'll be all good soon.

Something bad just happened.  Our database got corrupted somehow, but I was able to repair it.  I'm saving backups as we speak.  It is possible someone tried to hack or DoS this place...

My apologies to all.  The IP has been banned, and I have learned a lot.

Yeah, it sounds like they hacked into this site to hack into another site.  Thus, the IP ban.  That may explain why sometimes this site was incredibly slow, too.  Who knows how long that this has been going on for.

And once again today we are having issues.  Hopefully this will be then end of it, as there are many support people working on things right now.

YES IT IS SLOW BUT WHY WOULD ANYONE HACK INTO THIS SITE?

It's not just this site, it's the entire server this site is hosted on down in Florida.  I'm not sure what's going on.

Ok, for the first time all day, things seem to be improving.

Let me know if you see ANYTHING odd, any errors, especially any errors that say anything about a "database" or "MySQL", ok?

You should have my email address.  :)

Thankfully I'm not in Florida now or Tom would blame me   ;D

Hey Tom - thanks again for the tour...was nice to meet you and Lance.  Just wish Lesley could have been there.  Tell her "hi" for me anyway.

Just received this from support:

Hello Lance,

We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. Now the sites are loading fine. Please verify it from your side. Also refer the attached screen shot.

The server load was high due to high http connections to the server. We have blocked those ips. Now the
server load is normal and all the services are up and running fine.

Feel free to contact us for any further assistance.

Maybe that fixes everything up now.

Yes Mark, it was great to meet you and your wife.  I had a lot of fun, even though it was humid as .... a submerged submarine.  :)

I have noticed a huge difference.  Now when I click a button, the next page pops up instantly.  I never saw that on this website before.

It sounds like Hackers had all but taken over their server.  Glad they found the perps and blocked them , but they'll be back...

Yep.  You know, I have read more and more about DoS attacks lately.  I've had websites since 1996 and I've never had an issue because of a denial of service attack.  I suppose this is payback for when I used to be on the other end...

But anyway, I had to block a few IP addresses the other day from here, they were South America and China in origin.  I wonder if they got pissed?  I noticed it when I got on the forum and saw that we had 15 visitors and 2 members.  It's common to have a few guests as some people are truely guests who don't want to log in, and that's ok.  The other guests are usually bots from Google, Yahoo, and other search engine crawlers.  That's ok too.  But, the rest of the guests (like 7 of them) were all from nearly the same IP address, and they were registering for accounts and making errors happen.  That's when I did something.

I'm noticing a slow-down, again.  Script kiddies are back in action...

I'm seeing a slowdown too.  It could be anything though.  If it keeps on being an issue, I'll put in a ticket to be moved to another server.
