Title: HNSA conference in Mobile, who's coming?
Post by: Lance Dean on September 06, 2009, 05:29:04 PM
So who among you are coming down South for the HNSA meeting?

I know you are Rick.  I'm trying to figure out when or if to visit Battleship Memorial Park that week.

All HNSA participants will be weighed before and after visiting the Drum and must pass thru a metal detecter when leaving the Drum. There will be a special escort for Martha.   :2funny:  ;D

Well, from what I understand, those who have paid to be at the conference get an all day free pass to Battleship Park on the Saturday prior to the conference (the 18th).  Then it seems that the conference won't be anything to do with Battleship Park on Monday and Tuesday, but on Wednesday (the 23rd) there will be all kinds of stuff at Battleship Park.

I have not paid to be part of the conference, but I did want to try to get down there to visit while it was going on.  So it seems that either Saturday the 18th or Wednesday the 23rd would be the best days to try.  Rick Dennis said he would be down there Sunday night.  I might end up going down on Wednesday?  Wanted to try to go down on Saturday the 18th though so that Emily and Kara could come with me though.

Lance if you make it are you going to have any promotional stuff to promote Submarinemuseums.org? What ever happened to the video you put together?

I have a few of the SUBMARINEMUSEUMS.ORG bumper stickers that I was going to leave at the exit of the Drum for promotional ideas.  The video was shown at last year's USSVI convention.  I haven't had time to properly update it since then.

I'm hoping to be there too. We fly in on Saturday. Hope my dad stable and not scaring the hell out of me as per the last week or two!   :buck2:

I want to shake Tom's hand (and more for his assistant   :coolsmiley: ).

Tom: don't worry about patting me down after leaving DRUM... but someone should be worried about what I might leave on the doorstep of the boss...   ::)

Tom,
You don't have to be afraid of what he will take but what he will LEAVE onboard :2funny:

Paul, Please buy Tom and Leslie a beer for me and I will be more then happy to send you the money for those beers because they TRULY have done so much with so little for so long it isn't even funny :smitten:  Of all of the boats that have made a come back those two can TRULY say that they did it with little help from anyone (yes there were a lot of donations BUT) The work that they have completed in the last year or so a shipyard would have charged a million plus and they keep plugging on doing the impossible with next to nothing..

A HUGE BZ to Tom and Leslie for EVERYTHING that you have done

Darrin,
Thank you so much, it is the appreciation we get from the sub vets that keep us going. When we got into the bow and saw how far gone it is, we almost both cried. But then we sucked it up and literaly dug in and now it is looking doable. we have started replacing the hull skin with 1/4" plate that is donated and are finding new unique ways to bend it as we weld it in. I guess we are suckers for a challange.

Tom and Paul,

Emily, Kara, and I are thinking about taking a trip down to Foley, AL on Saturday through Saturday night, and then spending Sunday on the way back home at Battleship Park.

Either of you guys gonna be there on Sunday?

Lance:

We will be there for sure on Sunday... Sat-to-Thursday...   And meeting you and Tom is the only real reason I am going!

No shit!   :o

If it was 1989 or so (me, younger and skinny) , I'd be looking at Leslie in a "different" way -- something aboard women with BOTH a sub and a GUN!
Woooweee!   :smitten:

Tom -- THANK GOD you have a Portsmouth Gato... the parts I want are NOT compatible!

Well, if I understand correctly, Battleship Memorial Park opens at 8 am and closes at 6 pm until the end of September when it starts closing earlier.

Any particular time of day on Sunday you shooting for?

with the way things go around here, I don't even buy green bananas!    Not sure of the exact timing. In fact the conference hotel is a good drive away from the park. My cell:  216-408-6991.  We can coordinate once there.
I will get back to you about more specific timing when the three CODfish get their plans solidified.

I had a WONDERFUL time today meeting with you Cod guys, Rich Pekelney of Pampanito, and of course Tom Bowser.  We had an awesome time.  Attached is a photo of Emily and Kara in the aft engine room @ the Drum.  More on all of this later.

We all learned something important today about submarines... especially Kara, who learned that she is destined for duty aboard submarines!

The HNSA conference is over and the Drum is still in one piece, didn't even have to turn loose the guard dogs. It was great getting to talk to everyone and compare notes and boats, just not enough time. I talked to the Cod gang, Cobia, Batfish, Bowfin, Patriots Point, Pampanito, Battleships New Jersy, Wisconsin, Iowa, Keyport Museum, Naval History and Nave Sea and a bunch of others. I think the high point for every one was getting to watch a torpedo tube outer door coming open looking from the inside, about wore my arm off. I didn't take any photos-too busy talking but others took lots and maybe they will get posted after every one rests up.

Here's some pictures Tom!  Thanks for showing me around Drum! It was nice chatting with you. I just wish would have had more time to explore!

Gee, maybe the Torsk crew should stay home. We generally look for easy targets.  You know, though, we could take this as a challenge.   ::)
