Title: Submarine Guns

Folks,

At our museum, we get a lot of questions about how the guns survived repeated immersion in salt water.  The vets report it was just a lot of cleaning and grease.  Enclosed is a link to a 1947 document describing the replacement, plating, and painting of parts done to slow the corrosion on the submarine 40-mm Bofors.  I have no idea when they started making the changes to the guns.

I know the illustrations are bad.  I found this in the National Archives in College Park, MD textual branch and there was not enough time to send the drawings up to cartographic to be scanned.  This will have to wait for another trip.

Note that the 5" 25 cal Mk 40 gun was designed for submarine use from the start.

I tell the visitors that the guns weren't expected to last that long and on the Drum they were replaced after little over a year. mainly going from 3 to 4 to 5 Inch

I usually tell them that that is why there were seamen on the subs....
