Today, Mark Allen, Mark Sarsfield and myself discovered something that hasn't been seen in approximately four decades!  The starboard stern plane and screw shaft (some) and the bearings housing.  This dig was in preperation for the Muskogee PW department to back-hoe dig both the planes and the rudder from under the dirt/sand after 40 years.  Specifically we were looking for the electric lines that are run over the screw stub and near the planes.  We didn't want them to find that the hard way.  Enjoy the pics!

First pic is Mark and Mark as we get started looking for the outlines.

The second pic is headless Mark and Mark as we get close to finishing up for the day with the plane outline exposed.  We're not sure what the vertical surfaces on the outside edges of the plane are.  Our best guess is protection during the upriver shipping phase.  The left to right angle iron will be removed, it was also for shipping. The horizontal edge of the angle was at ground level when we started.  The hole is deceiving as it runs uphill towards the camera.  The hole ranges from two feet forward to almost 4 feet aft.  The plane itself is also at about a 10-15 degree "surface the ship" angle.

Third pic is an overhead of the exposed gear in great shape for 40 years under dirt.

The old girl started to roll over so Mark A. put a stop to that!

USS Batfish (SS-310) / Muskogee War Memorial Park Museum Face Lift
« on: April 01, 2013, 01:11:45 PM »
A proposal has been made for an interior face lift to the MWMP museum.  This should modernize and update its tired interior.  I am working on a quote for an external as well with the sheet foam covered in a sprayed "textured stucco-ish" coating.  This would help the museum look less like a barn and more like a serious museum.   ;D

Let's hope we can get this through.  :knuppel2:

Submarine Related Chatter / 2013 Goals
« on: March 21, 2013, 03:40:00 PM »
So, what are the boats going to try and accomplish for their "this year's" big projects?  Sound off.

I'll start.  Batfish:  Dig out the stern.  Rebuild the bridge area.  Expand the front 20mm deck and rebuild and replace (if we can find and have help with parts) the Oerlikon mount and sight.  Rebuild the 40mm deck area.  Install a ladder to the 40mm deck.  Rebuild/replace the scopes.  fabricate and install the 5" deck gun mount.

This is very aggressive. We also have plans for other areas of the Park and Museum proper.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Bridge and conning deck pictures

Does any balao boat have any good close up pictures of their bridge area?  Flooring, folding seats, hatches, etc.  Batfish's is completely gone.  I have prints but they are only partly helpful without some working pictures.  Help us out.  Post or send to me.  Thanks.  DBF.   ;D

USS Batfish (SS-310) / New Batfish research
« on: March 09, 2013, 11:46:10 PM »
It appears the dent line down the starbord side did not happen when the barges were swamped on the way to Oklahoma but the damage to the port screw protector was.  I have found an old article written by Dr. Edward McIntosh in Sea Classics magazine from September of 1982.  There are pictures were she is in dry dock with the dent already there.  The pictures were taken when they were getting ready to release her to Muskogee for museum status.  I am going to attach the magazine article as a pdf. The pictures are not very clear in the magazine as are all the pictures in those days.

Edit: Nope the file is 5 meg.  Too big for here.  I'll just attach a page.

Spoke with David Clark the Ad-hoc Clamagore curator.  he says the Clam's future is still up in the air.  he believed the ball was back in the Clam's court.  He is going to brief me on information as it becomes available.
