Museum Submarine Discussion / restoration patch
« on: March 11, 2013, 08:35:12 PM »
This is a reminder to everyone about the restoration patch. It is still available and at reasonable cost and we are selling them in our gift shop with almost all of the profit to the Drum. We sell them combined with the Drum rocker, the rockers are a good buy if you get 100 at a time, and we sold 100 last year. this year should do better because the gift shop is finally keeping them in one place and all employees know to keep an eye on the space and to restock when it gets low. We are charging $20 for the set and I have a book in the boat of our restoration photos and next to it is a flyer about the patch. It won't raise big money or fast money but it does bring in some good money and raises awareness of what our plight is. The patchs are available from subshop.com

USS Drum (SS-228) / Found in fuel/ballast tank
« on: September 14, 2012, 07:59:30 PM »
We found a USN flashlight made by Delta Electric co. in #6d fuel/ ballast tank. we pulled the batteries and we could still read one label pretty good. It was labeled Navy type c. I sent photo to Brightstar battery company and the said it was made between 1943 and 1956. We think it was dropped in 1957 when they were servicing the tank flood ports.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Drum's early Christmas
« on: June 30, 2010, 07:50:45 PM »
The Stanely family of tools (Stanley, Dewalt, Mac and Proto) Has just donated a bunch of stuff to us that would have cost me $3,000. It included a new welder, welding gloves, grinders and wheels, air drills, drill bits, wrenches and sockets and more. This came about from a tour I gave to one of their corporate managers. I am trying to see if they will donate to other boats that need help. I will keep you informed. That is one reason I hate to take a day off, never know who I will miss talking to.

USS Drum (SS-228) / Torpedoes and a flag
« on: November 12, 2009, 07:06:40 AM »
I was rereading the patrol reports and found a reference on the 2nd patrol about carring and firing MK XV torpedoes. At first I thought it was a misprint but they stated they had them in the after tubes and fired them at a target to use them up. The MK XV is 24' and I wonder if they could have had a MK XIV war head on them so they would fit the tubes. Does any one else have a record or knowledge of this for their boat?

Yesterday the New curator, Shea, found a flag on the battleship and a letter. The flag had ben flown on the Drum in 1945 when it left Hunters point to go back to the war, the date on the flag is 1944. It had been donated in 1980 and never put out. Shea is going to get it cleaned and we will display it.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Need Help
« on: January 08, 2009, 07:54:36 AM »
Anyone out there that has the slide out bunks in the torpedo rooms. We need detailed close photos of the way the racks and slide mechanism are mounted and what they look like.
