Museum Submarine Discussion / Need to get the word out
« on: October 13, 2012, 04:49:47 PM »
Wow, I was looking at the number of hits for some of these posts: 0's on a bunch.  I saw twos on some, but I know that I was both of those.  Someone needs to get the woed out that this board is out there.  It's no wonder I get no responses from some of my requests.

This past weekend, October 4 through 7, the USS Torsk (SS-423) came alive.  We had a crew of 47 volunteers who worked a number of projects aboard.  Visitors were impressed by all the work that was being accomplished.

For starters, a number of Marine gel batteries were brought topside using an electric winch.  The batteries had been donated and used as the source for emergency lights.

The deck of Torsk, which is being completely replaced to its 1960s configuration, was worked on and some of the metal work and coating was completed. Our bridge hatch, which broke free of its mounting studs was lifted and moved to a portion of the bridge where some much needed preservation work could be accomplished.  The broken studs were removed from the hatch itself along with some other parts that needed refurbishment.

Some much needed work was completed on the sound powered phone system.  We have begun to rely more and more on this system for communications throughout the boat and topside.  It is now approximately 98% restored and some stations have been added topside so that we can coordinate maintenance and movement of external components such as the radio antennas, bow planes, running and anchor lights and others.

Many small repairs throughput the boat were also completed.

All in al, I would say all 47 people worked their rear-ends off and had some great social time in the evenings.  Dinners Friday evening and Saturday evening were fantastic.  Thanks to all of our local and our remote crew members for all their hard work and awesome achievements!

Museum Submarine Discussion / Bridge Sound powered Phones
« on: June 07, 2012, 12:39:58 PM »
Let me ask this a different way:

Does anyone have a sound powered phone handset or headset that has a bridge pressure-proof type plu?  If so, would you please copy any info from the plug that you can find, ie., manufacturer, part no. FSN, etc.  It would be a big help to us on Torsk so that we can acquire a couple of the plugs needed to restore our sound-powered phone system.

See the attached photo.

Thanks!

Museum Submarine Discussion / Bridge Sound powered Phone Plugs
« on: May 31, 2012, 02:16:16 PM »
We are trying to restore the sound powered phone system aboard Torsk.  The receptacles topside in the Bridge are working, but we do not have the plugs needed to connect a handset or headset.  Does anyone have a source of or a couple spare connectors for the topside (pressure-proof) sound powered phone connectors?  These are not the same as the ones found throughout the inside of the boat.  The receptacle is labeled Type G-29 and has the number S6501-3892.

Thanks

Submarine Related Chatter / New Record?
« on: January 04, 2012, 01:22:48 PM »
This must be a record for the longest duration of no activity to date.  Isn't anything happening at any of the museum boats or did all the boats but Torsk sink? (now that would be a good trick for Batfish and some others!)   ;)

After taking a break for the holidays, the Torsk Volunteer Crew will be aboard the 423 this Saturday turning and burning and making things work.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Compartment Bills
« on: September 13, 2011, 12:51:39 PM »
Is anyone alive out there?  Surely there must be something going on aboard one of the museum boats.

Torsk needs copies of compartments bills, preferably from a boat that was converted to snorkel, but we'll take what we can get.  Rich Pekelney was good enough to send us copies from Pampanito once upon a time, but following a painting accident, we found that the ones he sent us were ruined.   Over that last couple of years, the ones we had posted in the compartment bill holders have managed to become souvenirs.  Can anyone help us out?

Thanks

Level/weight gauges are installed on a number of tanks including several trim tanks and the lube oil storage tanks.  Anyone know how they work?

Museum Submarine Discussion / Transformer repair
« on: July 03, 2011, 08:46:26 PM »
Torsk is in need of the name of a company that can refilland reseal and also rewind some filament/high voltage transformers.  The two filament/hi voltage transformers in our 1MC have elaked and the high voltage windings are arcing to the inside of the case.  We also have a filament transformer in one of the signal generators that has leaked and needs to be refilled and resealed.  Anyone out there have a contact?

Anyone have an electronic copy or spare paper copy of Naval Ships Technical Manual Chapter 233 - Diesel Engines?  Looking for cooling system maintenance and lube oil requirements.

OK, here is the question of the day:

Explain how electrical power gets from the battery to the trim pump.

School of the Boat / School of the Boat - AC Electrical
« on: December 11, 2008, 01:55:27 PM »
Here are some other electrical questions:

What is the source of 60 Hz AC power (for those boats that have it)?

Give a brief run down on how the power is produced to how it is distributed.

Maybe later I'll ask the standard qual question: How does power get to your bunk lamp?

School of the Boat / School of the boat 21 Nov 08 (DC Lighting)
« on: November 21, 2008, 01:26:26 PM »
Well, small surprise no one was interested in torpedo tubes.  We only carried those things out of sympathy for the TMs who would be jobless if we took them out.

AS A WARM-UP...

What are the sources of power for DC lighting?

How do you change the source?

Next week, a really hard question!

Museum Submarine Discussion / Speaking of Volunteers
« on: September 20, 2008, 08:18:10 PM »
I would just like for all the boat museums to know that you should be blessed to have a volunteer crew like Torsk.  I have worked aboard Torsk for about ten years now, and with few exceptions, we have had the same people show up year after year with little or no praise, certainly no pay, and make unbelievable improvements in the appearance, operational condition, and preservation of this old gal.  Torsk has a local hard working crew of about 16 people who show up week after week and do the routine preservation, preventative maintenance, and system and space restoration.  Then, we have a remote crew that travels from all over the country to help us out two or more times a year.  They make huge progress in compartment restoration, equipment and system restoration, and routine maintenance.  Their help is invaluable.  Torsk has gone from a floating tube in which the lights in most places didn't work to a boat that looks and is beginning to work like a submarine preparing to get under way for patrol.  We still have a long way to go, but, with a crew as awesome as Torsk's, she'll be the best of the museum fleet in no time.  Sorry, Paul, but you are about to be surpassed!  Sorry guys, but there is no boat with a crew that can compare to that of Torsk.

We look forward to the arrival of our remote crewmembers in two weeks.

New Member Introductions / New from Torsk
« on: June 18, 2008, 08:55:56 AM »
Hi All,

Request permission to come aboard.

My name is Mike Eacho.  I retired from the USNR as an ETC(SS) after a combined 22 years.  Did 8+ years active, qualified on the USS Von Steuben SSBN632(B) and did 5 patrols as a Reactor Operator, Reactor Technician, and EWS (yes, I was a Nuc).  Also did instructor duty for two years at S3G, the Nuc prototype in West Milton, NY (near Saratoga Springs).  After shifting to USNR, I served at SIMA Philadelphia for a couple of years and then NAVCOMMSTA Puerto Rico until I retired.

I now serve aboard the USS Torsk (SS-423).  Been with her for about ten years.  I do electrical restoration and repair and electronics restoration and repair.  The big project now is to restore Torsk's radio room to its 1965 configuration and make everything operational.  We started in February and we are making great progress.  Hope to be finished by Work Weekend in October.

As Darrin has said, I have been involved in many, many strip ship trips to the James River Reserve Fleet in Virginia, NAVSEA in Philadelphia, and Bremmerton.  We have pulled parts from Sailfish and from Trout.

Although we are geting close to having original or replacements for all the equipment found on Torsk during the 1960s, we still have a number of items we are looking for including an AT-350/BRC Side Mount Whip Antenna w/Fairings (mounted on the side of the sail), an AN/UGC-41 teletype printer keyboard, a SB-1203 teletype patch panel.  Over the years we have accumulated all kinds of repair parts and replacement parts that we would be willing to trade.  We also have some equipment that turns out we don't need that we'd be willing to give up.  You'd just need to pick or up or pay for shipping.

If I can help, let me know.  We wouldn't be where we are in our restoration effort without help from some terrific and knowledgeable people like Rich Pekelney.
