Museum Submarine Discussion / block and tackle on the WW II boats
« on: December 19, 2017, 11:58:38 PM »
Do any of the museum boats have an original set of the block and tackle used on the davit above crew's mess hatch that could be measured?  I *think* this is:
- 2" circ.(5/8") manila line, length?
- 8" wood  block with swivel, to mount with shackle on top, with becket on bottom
- 8" wood swivel hook double block
- rope thimble for the line

Do any of you have the withdrawing/loading lines for the torpedo tubes?
- 8" snatch block with swivel hook
- hook with 90 deg. turn to hook on torpedo tube
- ?? diam. manila line
- thimble for the line
hard to read, but check out:

Museum Submarine Discussion / welding equipment
« on: October 11, 2017, 07:48:58 PM »
Does anyone have any information on what welding equipment was aboard the submarines during WW II?  There was probably a standard Victor style gas welding torch, but was it in a kit? Which model?

Does anyone have a copy of:
"Submarine Concealment Camouflage", NavShips 250-631, 1 Aug 1945
that we could scan?

Folks,

We did some research and have put together the basic information on the TBTs, and the waterproof binoculars used for both the TBTs and later 5" 25 cal wet mount guns.  These should make restorations much easier:

https://maritime.org/doc/pdf/telescope-mark-90-91-op1398.pdf   Telescopes Mark 90 Mods. 0-1 and Mark 91 Mods. 0-1, Principles of Operation and Instruction for Shipboard Maintenance, OP 1398, 1946. (8.4 MB PDF) Describes the waterproof binoculars.

https://maritime.org/doc/pdf/tbt-mk8-op1189.pdf   Target Bearing Transmitter Mk 8, OP 1189, 1944, (21 MB PDF) shows the Mk 90 waterproof binoculars in the TBT.

https://maritime.org/doc/pdf/tbt.pdf   Target Bearing Transmitter Mk 9, OP 1148, 1945, (10 MB PDF)  shows the Mk 90 and Mk 91 waterproof binoculars in the TBT.

Most of the drawings for a Mk 90 binocular are available, search for telescope in:

Museum Submarine Discussion / Pampanito Drydocking
« on: November 11, 2015, 10:25:57 PM »
Folks,

FYI, Pampanito passed our $500K minimum goal for scheduling the next drydocking.  We will be going sometime in first quarter 2016.  I will let you know once we have updated quotes from the shipyards, and later when we have dates.  This will be 9 years as compared to our 7 year goal, but we are on the way.

We got #1 torpedo tube working again and have measured up the groove needed to create replica muzzle door gaskets.  As far as I know, none of the subs have replaced these and they are all probably rock hard.  We will let you know when we get quotes on the replicas.

Museum Submarine Discussion / National Archives Research
« on: June 06, 2015, 12:55:43 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone know someone in the Washington, DC / Baltimore, MD corridor that would be willing/able to go to the National Archives in College Park, MD to scan some documents?  I know where the document is (good finding aid).

For example, there is a manual for the waterproof binoculars that are used as part of the Target Bearing Transmitters, and on the Five Inch 20 cal wet mount gun.  I have the OP number, NARA locator, etc.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Simulated gun firing
« on: September 23, 2014, 01:08:31 PM »
Folks,

To support a lively discussion of the safety of simulated firing of museum guns at the recent HNSA meeting, we have added the following manual to maritime.org:

Clearing of Live Ammunition from Guns, NAVWEPS OP 1591, 1961, describes the safe methods of clearing live ammunition from guns.

http://www.maritime.org/doc/clearingord/index.htm

I really think the Hollywood FX folks have it right using gas systems because they are safer.  However, if you are using powder in any form, this might have some ideas that could contribute to your safety plan.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Bofors 40mm Restoration at Pampanito
« on: June 13, 2014, 12:02:18 PM »
Folks,

We are not done yet, but we have completed enough to post our progress on our second (final) Bofors gun project:
http://maritime.org/pres/bofors/index.htm

We are open to second guessing and suggestions for improvement.  This is still a work in progress.

We are still looking for some parts:
http://maritime.org/wish/bofors.htm
Or at least a handle and rear shield to document and replicate.

Museum Submarine Discussion / depth gauges
« on: May 20, 2014, 04:44:31 PM »
Folks,

Thanks to Cod, Drum, NHHC, MARAD, and others, Pampanito now has depth gauges.  Some real, some replica.  The replica's are all pressure gauges, but not calibrated for depth and without the fancier features that are on some of the gauges.  See:
http://maritime.org/pres/depth/
The wider availability of CNC laser cutters has made creating replica faces much easier.

We updated the barometer notes as well:

Museum Submarine Discussion / but cans, ash receiver
« on: April 18, 2014, 03:56:59 PM »
Hi,

Do any of you have a but can, cigarette ash receiver of the type in this drawing?  We would love to get some photos for a volunteer that is considering replicating these (metal spinning.)  Note these do not match the but cans we got from surface ships in Susuin, or the ones we saw on Cobia.

Museum Submarine Discussion / mystery holder on dive station
« on: January 26, 2014, 12:36:50 PM »
Folks,

Do any of you have a holder that looks anything like the one in the photos on your boat?

Any ideas of what it was used for?  My only guess is a stop watch, but why on the dive station?  Up in conning tower it might make sense, but not here.

Museum Submarine Discussion / New submarine medical book online
« on: November 28, 2013, 02:36:19 PM »
Folks,

I have added another submarine medicine book online.  Not that this includes a typical list of medical supplies that might help explain the biologicals question.

History of Submarine Medicine in WW II, 1947. This includes many stories, typical medical supplies, as well as history.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Biologicals Locker?
« on: November 25, 2013, 10:43:50 PM »
Folks,

So what do you think goes in the "Biologicals Locker", see attachment, or page 16 of
http://maritime.org/tech/drawings/misc-lockers-standards_ss-s3000-984074_32429_05_0425.pdf

1 foot x 1 foot x 2 foot with lots of 3/4" holes in the cool room, with a lock?

Yeast?  Except dried yeast was developed during the war and replaced live yeast.
Why the lock?
What else could it be?

Museum Submarine Discussion / periscope and other new manuals on the web
« on: November 24, 2013, 06:34:22 PM »
Folks,

A couple of new items on the web:

Submarine Periscope Type 2, 1940. Describes a type 2 attack periscope (89KA40/1.414) used during WW II. Be sure to also check the Fleetsub Periscope training manual.
http://maritime.org/doc/pdf/periscope-type2-1940.pdf (14.5 MB).

Submarine Periscope Type 4, 1942. Describes a type 4 standard periscope (93KN36) used during WW II. Be sure to also check the Fleetsub Periscope training manual.
http://maritime.org/doc/pdf/periscope-type4-1944.pdf (13.5 MB).

GUPPY IIA details, boxes, flashlight holders, etc.  that are the same as Fleetsubs.  See:
http://maritime.org/tech/drawings/misc-lockers-standards_ss-s3000-984074_32429_05_0425.pdf (4.5 MB)

also interesting, post war GUPPY IIA submarine paint specifications at:
