The Foundation website has the them registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization as of April 28, 2004. Do they have a separate tax status from the park/boat itself or is it one in the same? I ask because I remember Rick saying that the boat was a 501(c), which created difficulties in obtaining grants. ???

MarkS,
The Batfish Memorial Foundation and the Muskogee War Memorial are 2 seperate entities. Both have their own Board of Truestes and both have their own Tax ID's. The Batfish Memorial Foundation is in place (to the best of my understanding) raise funds and support the restoration of the Submarine. The Muskogee War Memoral is in place to provide a memeorial that honors all veterains from all branches of service and all wars. and to dducate the public about american military history. To that end the Muskogee War Memorial is in possession of the USs Batfish Submarine as a historical object to be maintained and preserved.

What if the foundation applied for grants on our behalf, since it's their purpose in life to raise money for the boat, anyway?

That is a good idea. I think this would be an excelent function of the Batfish Memorial Foundation.....

Yeah. It really should be left to them to find some grant writers that will get positive results. This gives you more time to do maintenance and run the store, so to speak.

How do we go about applying for the grants? Can anyone do it in behalf of the Batfish, or does it have to be the foundation applying?
