Cost effective to disassemble the torpedo.  Also, with todays technology, using digital cameras to take pictures of the disassembly for reference in putting it back together is a plus.  Perhaps each piece could be positioned by the muzzle using block and pulley off the deck.  Just tossing out ideas here.  :uglystupid2:

Don't you guys have that pipe company across the street from you?  Perhaps a stop by and explaining your plan and their input (plus equipment) is in order.  They have a forklift correct?

Well, if the USS Seal got their torpedo back in the tube when it was mistakenly fired while in Pearl, I think it can happen for the USS Batfish.  Just need to think out a good plan. As a side note, the USS Seal removed the warhead.  Because, it was loaded with TNT or torpex and it lighten the load. Yours has no explosives but taking off some items to lighten the load would be helpful.  Food for thought!

Looking at the pictures I can say a fork lift to get the torpedoes on the small shelf type area. But, some type of roller contraption would have to be made and also measured to the exact height of the muzzle. Once on the rollers, push the torpedo into the tube.  Lube the tube of course.  The roller set up would not have to be an engineering marvel really. Still, this is a heavy weapon and caution needs to be taken.

High pressure hose might do the trick in that FTR.  I suspect she will end up in the scrap mill.

Museum Submarine Discussion / Re: How To Keep Volunteers
« on: October 29, 2008, 04:39:40 PM »
I signed up from the Torsk internet site.  If I start to talk to a tourist and they seem super interested I often ask if they would like to volunteer.  Ultimately, your question was how to keep volunteers.

1.  Make it fun.
2.  Make each and every volunteer feel priceless no matter what they do on the boat.
3.  Each week, for the Torsk folks,  Wednesday a general email is sent out asking who will be on board. Nice reminder that the boat is still there and needs your help
4.  Plan on lunch for the volunteers on board.  Lunch meaning hot dogs/chips/soda. Really, what will hot dogs and rolls set you back?
5.  Work together, it is a social event as well as a restoration event.  If it is a social event as well as a restoration event, it becomes fun to attend and not just another job.
6.  Remember it is VOLUNTEER and your members can make it when they can.  It is not a job.  We all have those in one form or another. The hatch is always open no matter what Saturday you can make it. Again, it is supposed to be a fun, no pressure day restoring something cool for generations to come.  ;)

Hey fellas, thanks for the nice letter of appreciation you sent me for assisting the Batfish in getting her long lost torpedoes back were the belong.  It was my pleasure and I'm glad all worked out for the volunteers and the Batfish.  I will frame it and mount it on my office wall.

Wow, what a nice piece of history and memorial to have on display for the Ling.  I'm a firm believer in not letting people forget who came before them and gave so much so we can have what we have today. Heart felt letter also!

I understand your torps have arrived.   Can you take a few pics of them and post them up?

Submarine Related Chatter / Re: Top 10 Submarines in History
« on: July 22, 2008, 03:40:03 PM »
I think some of the selections and grading were done mostly for what the submarine did in that part of history and time.  For instance, the Nautilus was the first nuke boat and helped kick off what the cold war came to be.  The VII German U is probably the most recognizable boat for a lot of people and probably visually the scariest of them all.  Let's face it, anything brought up on uboats of submarines for that matter, the VII is always pictured.  The VII was really the uboat menace and precursor to unrestricted submarine warfare. The VII really brought terror to the sea.  Service length and fear factor are high and with good reason.  Then innovation was graded in as well.
