The December issue of the Naval Insitute's prestigious Naval History magazine features an outstanding WWII U.S. submarine warfare focus. It includes an excellent lead story by noted author James Scott which discusses the Silversides' role and I'm humbled to have a couple of photos from my collection included as well, interior shots of the Batfish and a wartime firsthand account of the Batfish's sinking of three submarines.

I have seen copies for sale at Barnes & Noble but they were not stocked at my local one when I was there Friday.

More information about the magazine or back issues can be found at www.usni.org.

Submarine Related Chatter / Outstanding new book: The War Below

This is a groundbreaking new work highlighting our submarines' valiant effort in the Pacific against a determined and persistent foe, including shedding new light on the Silversides' and Drum's role in it and the suffering of the USS Tang crew in captivity. I was privileged to assist the author with some sources and photos, including the cover.

How about remembering and reflecting upon the sacrifice and accomplishments of the Silent Service with a selection of classic submarine flicks on Turner Classic Movies Saturday morning? The schedule includes: 6:00 a.m. "Hell Below" (1933); 10:00 a.m. "Destination Tokyo" (loosely based on some of the Silversides exploits) (1943); 12:30 p.m. "Torpedo Run" (1958); 2:15 p.m. "Run Silent, Run Deep" (1958); 4:00 p.m. "Up Periscope" (1959); and 6:00 p.m. "Operation Pacific" (1951).

Personally, "Submarine Command" starring William Holden and "Das Boot" are two of my very favorites of the genre.

This is an excellent essay about how to properly run a museum ship. Sometimes I wish the Navy would require all museum ships to meet the same requirements that a new venture must meet.
