Title: I need your photographs!!
Post by: Lance Dean on July 05, 2008, 03:46:36 PM
Everyone,

I would like to put together a computerized revolving pictorial presentation to be part of Lockwood Internet Base's (http://www.lockwoodbase.com/) "Memorial Submarine Display Table" (http://www.submarinemuseums.org/pics/misc/conventionad2008.pdf) at the 2008 USSVI Convention (http://www.ussvi2008.com/) in September.  I'm hoping this will bring attention to the table and get people to stop for a while to check out what all the table will have to offer.  I am asking anyone and everyone to email me recent (in the last few years) photographs from any of the submarine museum boats, including:

USS Cod (SS-224)
USS Drum (SS-228)
USS Silversides (SS-236)
USS Cavalla (SS-244)
USS Cobia (SS-245)
USS Croaker (SS-246)
USS Bowfin (SS-287)
USS Ling (SS-297)
USS Lionfish (SS-298)
USS Batfish (SS-310)
USS Becuna (SS-319)
USS Clamagore (SS-343)
USS Pampanito (SS-383)
USS Razorback (SS-394)
USS Torsk (SS-423)
USS Requin (SS-481)
USS Marlin (SST-2)
USS Albacore (AGSS-569)
USS Nautilus (SSN-571)
USS Growler (SSG-577)
USS Blueback (SS-581)
USS Dolphin (AGSS-555)
U-505 (German)
K-77 (Russian)
B-39 (Russian)
B-427 (Russian)

Please send any photos to SUBMARINEMUSEUMS@Gmail.com and if possible, include the following:
1) Submarine name?
2) What is happening in the photo, or what is the event taking place in the photo, or who is in the photo? (whichever is/are applicable)
2) Who took the photograph? (if you know)
3) When was the photograph taken? (approximately is fine)

Before and after pictures of any restoration effort (painting, cleaning, repairing, etc) will greatly be appreciated.  Special events are a plus too.  Good indoor and outdoor shots are welcomed as well.  Yes, I want any photographs!

I'll accept any and all photographs, but please DO NOT SEND copyrighted photographs unless it has been approved to do so.  Don't worry about size, the bigger the better and I'll resize to what is needed.  The maximum attachment size limit for Gmail is 20 megabytes, so please keep single email attachments to something smaller than that and send multiple emails with attachments if you need to.

If I can keep the filesize small on the end resulting presentation, I hope to make it downloadable to the public.  With your permission I would also like to use any of your photographs on the SUBMARINEMUSEUMS.ORG (http://www.submarinemuseums.org) website.  If you have any questions please ask.

I'll only be able to work with what I'm given, so please send me anything you have.  Once again, the email address is:

SUBMARINEMUSEUMS@Gmail.com

The convention is less than 2 months away!  I'm working with Bill on this.  He's gathering video footage.  Hopefully together we'll be able to put together something snazzy!

I can get you some for the BATFISH.  I have many showing the sub before and after restoration activities.

Are you looking for anything in particular?  Such as 3/4 view, side view, etc...?

And to those of you who received an email newsletter from me about this thread, I am sorry that I revealed the email addresses to all.  That was a major screwup for me.  Hopefully none of you on the list are spammers.

 :coolsmiley:

I'll do my best not to mess up like that again.

Nothing in particular.  I'm not picky.  :)  Any photograph you're happy with is fine with me.  I'm not sure what direction I'll go with the thing..I'll have to see how the response is.

Chris, that would be wonderful!  I need some good exterior shots of the Croaker.  To make it even better, if you can take your photos at 1 megapixel or higher up to 5 megapixels, that'd be great!

Go over to Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/) and go to Groups.  Do a search for Submarine.  I found several hundred pictures there in several groups.  There were a lot of the museum boats there.  Drum had a lot.  I'm setting up my account to post all the pictures I can get for the USS Picuda for my website.  So far I only have 10 photos posted.

But it could be a good source for you to find photos that you do not have.

I will do that as a last resort.  I'm not going to take any photos without the owner's permission, which was why I didn't just search the internet for what I wanted.  People go crazy over the ownership of their photos.

You post on Flickr with the understanding that what you post is public.  Besides a simple e-mail and most people would be willing to share for a worthy cause such as yours.

Yep, I've been searching over Flickr for some photos to use.  I've found some good ones.  Many Flickr photos DO have some type of copyright associated with them, but so far upon contact with their owners I've received the go-ahead to use them.

Lance,
Just take some of them from my blog. I already got permission from the people who took the pictures.
Also, we have a cd from the reunion that has all of the "dolphin" pictures from the dedication to deactivation.

David.

We have USS MARLIN photos!!!  We have GOOD USS MARLIN photos!!!   :D  :D  :D  :D

Eric Rogge of Omaha, NE went out and voluntarily took photos of her for us!!  What a great fella!  I'm thrilled.  Can't wait to get this all together!

My eyes hurt.

On average and where I have the choice, I'm going to put 10 to 20 photos of each boat.  There are still a few boats that I have very few GOOD photos of and can't find any, but oh well I can only work with what I have and can get.

Looks like this presentation is going to be a good 30 minutes long.  Just photos.  Wow.

Did Marlin always have a sail or was she one of the GUPPY candidates?  Interesting design.  I'd be interested in seeing more external and internal pictures of her.

built in 1950, no alteration to the sail that I know of.  Here is a picture of her when launched.  Sail looks the same.

I thought this was the original Marlin sub of Marlin/Mackerel fame from the late 30's/early 40's.  My bad.

that was a different boat the SS-205 a Mackerel class boat built in the 1940's. It was sold for scrap in 1946. The SS-205 operated mostly off the New England coast and never had any war patrols that I am aware of.  Mostly training and escort duties

Yeah.  I knew the original was a training vessel.  We have an old salt at our museum that served on the Mackerel.  He has a lot of neat stories about those two boats.

So, what class of boat is the 1950's version supposed to be?

Well, so far I have about 32 minutes of photos.  Does anyone have sound effects or music recommendations?

The Marlin and Mackerel SST-1 and SST-2 were about 131' long and displaced about 300 tons.  They were T-1 class subs. I think these two were the only ones ever build.  1 torpedo tube forward, 2 officers and 16 crew members.  Used for targets and training for fleet sonar school in Key West.  Both were active when I was in Key West in the 60's

It was fun watching them load a torpedo - it had to come in through the aft hatch, and go all the way forward through the boat.  I do believe that on occasion the COB could take them to sea with no officer.

Yeah, no russian music. How about some of the songs from the naval academy? I was watching some good submarine videos on youtube and they had some really interesting takes on music there.

Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody comes in mind.. but thats another story.  :2funny:

Why not use the music from Victory at Sea?

Last call for any photos you have that you wish to contribute.  I thank everyone who did send me photos to use.

I plan on putting the finishing touches on this project this weekend and mailing off the final cut to Bill Lee on Monday.

If any of you wish to see the newest version and ARE NOT GOING to the convention, please PM me.  It might help to try it out on different computer setups anyway.

The presentation is ready for the convention!  I'll be mailing Bill his copies in the morning.

I have 3 versions.

#1 is a 235 MB .exe file.  This is likely what will be seen at the convention.  The quality is not as good as DVD, but it is super easy to navigate.  Just one file to run, no install, no player needed.  Just press Esc at any time to go back to the main menu to select which submarine boat you want to see the photos of.  It also has a "Loop All" option for continuous looping of all the shows!

#2 is a DVD with a menu. The problem is that the menu doesn't work properly in all DVD players that I've tested.  :(

#3 is a DVD without a menu.  This sucker works no matter what.  To navigate, you just use your remote's NEXT and PREVIOUS buttons (the chapter buttons) to go forward or backward.  This is my favorite for quality playback.

Thank you to everyone who contributed in any form!
