There is a new effort being made by a group to save USS Clamagore. We should support them any way we can in this effort. Otherwise, this piece of WWII history will soon be an artificial reef in the Atlantic Ocean.

I hate the idea of a museum sub going to scrap or a reef. But the sad fact is that it's too little, too late to save the Clam. She has been neglected for DECADES by her own management, and to be blunt, by outsiders and vets. Where were these guys 5, 10, 15 years ago??

I signed up on the FB page for moral support, but I'm with Fred. She would need a ton of work to make her seaworthy enough to make the trip to TN.

Ton of work = Ton of money. Not even mentioning the cost of the tow.

It's nice to see that there are some that think it is possible to save the Clamagore, but after all the neglect over the years it doesn't seem reasonable that the money needed to do the job can be found.

3-4 Million for repairs and about 200,000 for towing. We will have a web site up soon to keep people updated.

Not only do they need to get CLAM into shape for a tow, tow it to Knoxville, and then fix it up for display (minimal improvements at that), BUT THEY ARE LOOKING TO BUILD A FULL-BLOWN MILITARY MUSEUM!!! That alone would double or at least triple the amount needed to be raised... and that gets you a little mom&pop museum of military stuff from local vets, not a really worthwhile facility (that would take about $10 million minimum) and then there is staff costs (volunteers help, but you need paid staff to manage and curate!)...
I hope there are some very patriotic folks in the Volunteer State with deep pockets. It can happen, but only when the dollars are flowing like BS at the Legion Hall! Good luck to them!

We have spoken to the Knox county Mayor on several occasions not an easy thing to do and Josh Richardson spoke to the Farragut city council last night with some encouraging results (Farragut lays inside Knox county). We had with us a river boat operator/owner who is willing to custom build a barge for us. Today Josh has an appointment with the Knox county mayor's chief of staff. Most of our efforts are being received well. That is a ways from the commitment for property we need for the NavSea application. Both the Knox mayor and the Farragut city council mentioned the same one without previous knowledge of the other.
We just found out that she cannot be sunk while she is designated as National Historic Landmark that designation must be removed that is encouraging as well as we have been worried about time frame.

We are still moving forward we have had discussions with the Knox county Mayor and the Town of Farrugut city council (inside Knox county) both mentioned the same property as a potential site. We are still early in our efforts and no firm commitments. The ball is still in our court we have to complete our charter, I think in next month or so, and get a 501 (3) (C) to fulfill requirements of phase one of the NavSea application. We have our bylaws and board elected. New support here in Knoxville is a military historian from the University of Tennessee and a local river boat captain who is a marine engineer who has started preliminary designs for a barge to transport the 343 that gives us two members who have their captains license.

You are cordially invited to the "Clamagore Family Reunion" hosted by Friends of the Clamagore. It will be held Saturday, September 20th, 2014 from 1PM until 3PM at the Holiday Inn Cedar Bluff in Knoxville, TN. We are fortunate to have as our Keynote speaker former Clamagore Captain and author Don Ulmer.
We will gather together Friends of the Clamagore and the men who served aboard her and their families to visit with friends old and new and to share a message with East Tennessee. Clamagore is a one of a kind, irreplaceable piece of history which served this nation for thirty years and has a long and rich history just like East TN. Our region is an ideal home for this National Historic Landmark because of her role in the Cold War and the men from East TN who served aboard.
Guests are former crew and officers of the USS Clamagore, family members of crew and others with ties to Clamagore. Our room capacity is limited to 200 attendees so at this time, we cannot accommodate the general public.
Everyone who wishes to attend must RSVP to friendsoftheclamagore@gmail.com SUBJECT: COMPLETED RSVP. Please return the attached RSVP form as soon as possible. If you are unable to complete the RSVP form, attach and return it via email, please send the pertinent information in the body of an email. Members of Friends of the Clamagore who wish to support the event should complete and return an RSVP by checking "Other" and noting "FOTC" following your name.
The reunion is at no cost, but attendees must cover their travel, hotel and per diem costs. We are working to get discounted room rates at the Holiday Inn Cedar Bluff, but the hotel has requested number of guests, rooms and nights. Please complete that information in your RSVP as well.
