Title: Submarine Trivia: Week 3
Post by: MWALLEN on January 18, 2009, 01:47:59 PM
OK - hope this is a bit easier and will get a few more replies:

1.  Which US submarine (name & number) is the only one to sink a IJN Battleship?

2.  Name the commanding officer of this submarine.

3.  On which patrol did this attack occur?

4.  When did it happen (mm/dd/yyyy)?

5.  Name the IJN Battleship.

6.  How many torpedoes were fired at the battleship?

Good Luck.

Mark A.

21 Nov, 1944 (war patrol number 3)
USS Sealion (ii) (Lt.Cdr. E.T. Reich) torpedoes and sinks the Japanese battleship Kongo (27500tons, offsite link) and the Japanese destroyer Urakaze (2035tons, offsite link) about 60 nautical miles north-north-west of Formosa in position 26º07'N, 121º36'E

0245 Sealion fires 6 torpedos, depth 8', range 3,000 yrds.  Minutes later, stops and fires 3 more at the Yahagi, lt. cruiser, depth 8', range 3,100 yrds.

Heard and saw three hits on Kongo, seen listing, but still underway.  Also sees one hit on Yahagi.

at 0524 Sealion is setting up to fire again at Kongo when hears and sees large explosion an Kongo sinks

If you have not heard these recordings, here is the actual recordings made on the Sealion during this attack

Sorry guys...wow...3 months since my last question.  School kicked my butt this semester...no free time.

However, I get a month off before my Undersea Warfare class in June, so I'll try to get more posted.

Oh, BTW...this was the correct answer.
