School of the Boat / School of the Boat 23 Mar 09 (Diesels)
« on: March 22, 2009, 08:35:52 PM »
Anybody care to take on explaining the main diesels?  I almost qualified on the Billfish (SSN-676) as a diesel operator.  That was a Fairbanks Morse.  I don't have much of a clue about the GM Wintons.  Also, what was the proceedure for starting and stopping them?  What are the main subsystems etc.?  Anybody?  Anybody?  Terry

Mark, can you contact me off list?  My E-mail is; etkfixr@yahoo.com.  We are close to our next event and since we are basically doing the same thing I'd like to get our two groups sharing info.  How many other groups are doing submarine living history?  Oh yeah!  Terry

USS Clamagore (SS-343) / clamagore update
« on: June 04, 2008, 09:07:30 PM »
We held our first Clamagore Living History event this past weekend, May 31st and June 1st.  We had 10 members in the "plankowners" group.  We introduced the non-submarine qualified guys to the submarine qual program and had several School of the Boat meetings.  each member was issued a reproduction qual card to complete.  The high point was meeting former crew member Senior Chief Sid Busch who gave us the grand tour and answered many questions we had about the Clamagore and her crew.  Senior Chief agreed to join the Living History Crew as the groups Chief Of The Boat.  We are hoping to set up a working arrangement with the Patriots Point Staff to allow the group to assist in restoration work.
There are plans to get the Clamagore into drydock for hull repairs.  We found out that a marine engineer did a survey of her.  I beleive that she will be taken to the former Charleston Navy Yard for the overhaul.

New Member Introductions / Another New Guy
« on: March 18, 2008, 06:24:02 PM »
Hi All, my name is Terry Kuhn, I was on the Andrew Jackson, SSBN-619 and the Billfish, SSN-676.  I currently work at the Battleship North Carolina Memorial.  We have been doing a living history program there since 1996 and recently started helping with events at Patriots Point onboard the Laffey.  We have been itching to get on the Clamagore to do programs there and were recently given the go ahead from Patriots Point.  Most of our guys like to get dirty fixing things up where-ever they do events, so I'm hoping to bring some eager volunteer workers to the Clamagore.  No matter where you go everyone loves the picture of a sailor chipping paint!  Terry
