Job Description

Job Purpose:

Cavalla Historical Foundation, or CHF, (an IRS-approved non-profit, 501(c)3) manages all visitor experience, military appreciation, and maintenance functions for the American Underwater Warfare Center, which provides  for public display the USS Cavalla (Gato-class Hunter/Killer Submarine), the USS Stewart (Destroyer Escort), the sail of the USS Tautog, a Memorial to the USS Seawolf, and a Memorial Plaza dedicated to all lost submarines and submariners.  CHF seeks a highly motivated, energetic and outgoing individual to assume the duties of Chief Operations Officer and Curator for the military displays and artifacts.

Duties:
•You will ensure that the Foundation, staff, employees, volunteers and guests adhere to all applicable federal, state and local safety requirements, and that both ships and military displays are maintained in visitor-ready condition.
•You will oversee a maintenance and repair budget, coordinating your procurement actions with the CHF, and will direct the operations of a small retail outlet (ship’s store) on Park Grounds.
•You will actively recruit, oversee and mentor park volunteers on a continuing basis, taking into account volunteer experience, interests and ability in assigning tasks.  This duty may include:
•Creating priorities and assigning tasks;
•Maintaining activity lists and training materials for volunteers;
•Conducting training sessions to implement an effective volunteer program, thereby extending and enhancing the functions of the staff;
•Ensuring volunteer work hours are properly tracked and effectively managed;
•Ensuring adequate supplies, tools and appropriate safety equipment is on hand for volunteers.
•You will maintain custody, security and management of CHF’s artifact collection, and work closely with CHF Board of Directors in identifying and procuring appropriate additional artifacts as they may become available.
•You will represent CHF and AUWC at meetings, seminars and training sessions and serve as the Foundation’s ambassador with the local, national and veteran communities.
•You will direct the maintenance of both museum ships, as well as the buildings and park grounds.
•You will host and assist the U.S. Navy Inspection Team during its annual evaluation of vessel condition and staff compliance, promptly addressing inspection recommendations, preparing and submitting required annual reports for U.S Navy owned equipment and property.
•You will oversee the preparation and hosting of Memorial Day and Veterans Day services at Seawolf Park, coordinating with federal, regional and local political offices and military commands to ensure an appropriately solemn and reverent observance.
•You will assist with the Youth Group Sleep Aboard program, to promote and oversee educational outreach opportunities for various student groups, including disadvantaged groups, to include Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of America, Seaborne Challenge, Texas A&M cadets, and other maritime based educational groups.
•You will prepare all vessels and equipment for inclement weather to include storm conditions, and maintain an effective emergency contingency plan.

Desired Skills & Experience

Skills/Qualifications:
•Ability to work closely with, and take direction from, the Board of Directors in executing the Foundation’s Strategic Plan.
•Ability to work in concert with the Galveston Park Board to align CHF and Park Board plans and efforts.
•Ability to work independently, with minimal direction and able to prioritize and accomplish the organization’s goals.
•Possess a working knowledge of basic electricity, mechanics, plumbing and construction.
•Possess and understanding and appreciation for the missions of the U.S. Navy’s surface and subsurface combatants.

Desired Attributes/Background:
•Understanding of Gato class submarines and Edsall class destroyer escorts, and their history, theory, operations, maintenance and repair.
•Proficient in basic computer and standard office-suite business applications.  Database management a plus.
•Prior shipboard experience, particularly on a combat ship, a plus.

Experience in non-profit organization, particularly in a leadership function, a plus
