MK 25 NAVOL Indicator Panel in After Torpedo Room
« on: November 19, 2008, 05:35:35 PM »
One of our recent additions to the boat is a MK25 NAVOL Indicator Panel in the After Torpedo Room. We also have one for the Forward Room that is under restoration. These both came from TRITON a few months ago.

The one in the ATR works in the CAL mode - see the photo below.

Gil,

  What does this indicate?

I'll defer to one of the resident TM's for a detailed explanation, but it is used to monitor the condition of the NAVOL fuel in a Mark 16 torpedo. NAVOL is a hydrogen peroxide based fuel and very unstable. Each MK16 would have a monitoring unit attached and connected to the MK25 panel.

Gil nailed it on the head with what it monitors,

you don't want the alcohol leaking or worse yet the hydrogen leaking back inboard into a sealed tight hull. Right now the pic shows the Mk 25 monitor panel in "calibration" mode and that did exactly what it sounds like. it calibrated the surrounding air with what is supposed to be "within limits" set into it by the manufacture. Currently we have the monitor panels but we don't have the NAVOL Monitors that went into the weapons, I am trying to track down a monitor that was actually in the weapon for use by Torsk on loan or for permenant display (when the vols are onboard)

Was this something that used to be on the Torsk?

Sure was, there is one in both of the Torpedo Rooms and ours were removed somewhere after her '68 decommissioning or after she was a reserve boat in '71 and finally given over to the city of Baltimore as a museum at the end of '72 and delivered in '73

I didn't realize that Mk 16's were used into the 60's.

Hey John,
I saw the Mk 25 Monitors today and they looked right at home and the only thing missing right now is a Mk 16 torpedo with a NAVOL monitor still inside for us to make them work once more.. or for that matter just a Navol monitor for them to work :coolsmiley:

I am trying to track down a NAVOL monitor so we can actually show the tourists (when we are onboard) how they used to work and what they did :)

Our last chance at getting a sending unit has passed and we missed it, maybe ebay may have one in the future :-\
