Copied this off of Submarine Sailor.com

RODERICK, Jr., Theodore Scott "Ted", 90, passed away March 24, 2008, in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and was the son of the late Theodore Scott Roderick Sr. and Mary McLaughlin. Soon after Ted's birth, his family moved to Warren, Ohio. Ted was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1936. In 1937, he won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated in February 1941. His first duty assignment was in the North Atlantic aboard the USS Du Pont. At the start of World War II, he transferred to the submarine service in the Pacific, serving aboard the USS Stingray (SS-186) and USS Torsk (SS-423). During the war he married Mary Frances Taylor, his long- time sweetheart of Norfolk. In 1949 while serving in China, he resigned his commission to spend more time with his family. After the Navy, he soon found employment as a plant manager and then as an electrical engineer. He worked for a number of years in California for General Cable Corp. until retiring in 1978. He and Frances returned to Virginia Beach, where they attended Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church, and he volunteered as a docent for the Norfolk Zoo. He was an avid golfer and, until recently, belonged to the Virginia Beach Senior's Golf Club. Ted is survived by his son, Theodore Scott III and his wife June of Glen Rock, N.J.; his son, John Christopher and his wife Lorie of Williamsburg; and he is also survived by his four grandchildren, Susan, Stephen, Sarah and Evan. In addition to his loving wife, Frances, he is preceded in death by his four sisters, Dorothy, June, Natalie, and Ginny, and two brothers, Bob and Dick. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Southeastern Chapter, 6315 North Center Drive, Suite 233, Norfolk, VA 23502-4006. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hdoliver.com.

To be honest, not sure. Gil is the man who searchs them out and has the records. Sometimes out of the blue one will board the Torsk. I think the last visit, unexpected, a crewman handed over the wood Torsk sign from here launch!  Beyond just WW2, there are many who crewed the Torsk into the 50-60's. In fact, one who earned his dolphins on her in the 60's helps with restoration.

I figured that there were a lot of cold-war guys still around and people that qualified on her.

Hey Chris remember it took Larry "TorskDoc" years to qualify and then it took some unnamed asshole 688 sailor to push the issue and then get a qualified Officer and a couple of other qualified folks to include Tim to sign his certification. At first he didn't want the unnamed asshole to do it because he never made it to subschool or to the boats due to a medical problem at the time of his pressure test (head cold of all things which resulted in bleeding from a few different places) and he left the Navy right after that. But after the unnamed asshole told him to shut the hell up and accept it because he knew more about her then those of us who did go to sea and that we would all have gladly sailed with him, that certificate is mounted on his wall and is source of pride for him now.
