Batfish Aft Battery Discussion
« on: April 23, 2008, 04:47:43 PM »
It sounds like My next major project will need to be that after battery.  I will need help getting the water tanks back in place ant then I will place a false floor in at the second step.  Once that is done.  Table/work benches will come as needed.

Please do not think I was comming down on ya.  I am just trying to keep a little control.

I hate being the bad guy.    :police:

It sounds like I found a near-term project.  I'd be more than happy to get the work shop up to speed.  It will allow me to bring soem tools and electrical equipment down that I can just leave there.

If we put in a false floor at the second step, how much head room is left?  I'm 6 feet tall.  I know that it's extra work, but putting in a few trap doors in the new floor will give us some extra storage space or even a place to hide a few things that we want to be very hard to find - you never know when you'll be boarded by Imperial Storm Troopers.  ;)

In addition to what you mentioned, we'll need to install some electrical outlets down there.

Finally, if we ever get a 250 VDC rectifier, it will probably have to live down there, too.  There should be plenty of room to accommodate all of this stuff, though.

On the 3rd, Vaughn, Ed and myself will be there.  Maybe between the 4 of us we can lift those tanks back into place.

I know in the Forward Battery there are outlets as I did all the work on the doors there...I can only assume there are matching outlets in the aft battery also.

Yes...I had a circular saw in the Fwd Battery when I constructed the doors in officers area.  But now that I think about it...I may have run the extension cord into the control room.  Too long ago to remember and I've not been in that area since. Best bet is to go and look instead of trusting in my memory.

I don't think you'll have enough room to stand up straight.  I think the false floor would cause more work that really isn't going to benefit the work room or the sub.  The bottom floor will have adequate room to set up tables and benchs, will also allow you to stand up straight.

My 2 cents.

ti looks like I have a discussion point here.  I was looking at foot room as well.  I do not want the floor to go on the top step as that would croud too much.   I was looking at the mid level to help give some walking room while at the same time giving us head room.  As always I am open to discussion on this point.

As always I am open to discussion on this point.

Let's take a look at it in person on Saturday and toss some ideas around.  It's hard to visualize what you are wanting and maybe being onsite we can get some type of plan/idea in place.

Another idea is to create work benches with two sizes of legs.  The back legs could be shorter to rest on one of the steps.  The front legs would extend to the lower main floor.  With the benches mostly over the steps, we would maximize the lowest level for foot traffic.

Speaking of foot traffic, I'm guessing that we will keep the entry to the battery compartment as is.  In other words, we'll continue to use a ladder, instead of putting in steps like the Torsk did.  I'm probably against the steps idea, since we would have to cut a larger opening and remove some bunks.

I would like to see an easier access hatch to open and close.  The metal plates over the forward and aft battery compartments have to go.
