Individual Boat Websites
« on: March 17, 2008, 03:37:22 PM »
Have been going thru the Batfish website checking my links to other boat pages (it's been a while since I've checked) and have found that 46 links don't work anymore.  That's 46 boat histories that have disappeared.  We need more people to step up and do SOMETHING before our history disappears.

I have no military experience but saw a need to document the history of the BATFISH.  We need more people to "see the need" to save our history.

I was surprised to see so many WWII boat pages gone.  Makes me sad.

I agree.  There are some great compilation websites out there though.

And thank you for the nice plug on the Batfish links page.

Some of my favorite links include:

http://www.pigboats.com
http://www.valoratsea.com/
http://www.oneternalpatrol.com/
http://www.thesubreport.com/

I'm going to get around to creating a nice submarine links page for the website sometime.

Someone took the time to list the history of just about every submarine that ever existed in the US Navy on Wikipedia.  I usually don't promote that commie-pinko website, but it has very detailed information on WWII boats and Pacific battles, in general.

Last month I updated the main pages for the Gato, Balao, and Tench class submarines on Wikipedia with all of the submarine museums and their locations - some were already there for the Gato boats.  Now, when Johnny does a book report, he can see that there are 8 Balao subs available for viewing in the US.

I got corrected last night due to an error from wikipedia.org.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Silversides_%28SS-236%29

"The tonnage of the ships sunk by Silversides amounted to 90,080 tons, second only to the total of the Tang."  <---- is wrong

Per this site:
http://www.valoratsea.com/subton1.htm

Silversides is 5th in tonnage, behind the Tang and 3 others.

I'm not claiming that it's 100% correct.  That's the problem with Wikipedia.  Still, it does have a lot of good information on the boats.

'Course not!  The only way to ever get things correct is to put it up and let others find your mistakes...just like I'm doing right now!  :)

Do you have a specific link?

Here are the Gato, Balao, and Tench main pages, but many other classes are available.  All boats for a given class are listed at the bottom of the page...
