USS Sealion (ii) (Lt.Cdr. E.T. Reich) torpedoes and sinks the Japanese battleship Kongo (27500tons, offsite link) and the Japanese destroyer Urakaze (2035tons, offsite link) about 60 nautical miles north-north-west of Formosa in position 26º07'N, 121º36'E
0245 Sealion fires 6 torpedos, depth 8', range 3,000 yrds. Minutes later, stops and fires 3 more at the Yahagi, lt. cruiser, depth 8', range 3,100 yrds.
Heard and saw three hits on Kongo, seen listing, but still underway. Also sees one hit on Yahagi.
at 0524 Sealion is setting up to fire again at Kongo when hears and sees large explosion an Kongo sinks
